The Cure for Corporate Stupidity: Avoid the Mind-Bugs that Cause Smart People to Make Bad Decisions, by Larry J. Bloom

Overview
Just like software has bugs, we have bugs in how we think and make decisions. These bugs occur in the five inches between our ears, and many problems in business today are not the result of factors that occur outside our thinking, but, rather, they are self-inflicted as a result of Mind-bugs™. This book will help you understand, identify, and avoid mind-bugs.

What is this book about?

This book is about how leaders, managers, and employees may unknowingly make bad decisions and destroy value along the way. It addresses why many are simply unaware of the flaws plaguing some of their decisions and resist any thought that they are wrong—until it is too late. And it provides a simple, straightforward, low cost, easy-to-implement way to understand, identify, and avoid many flawed decisions. The insights and solutions were developed based on the authors 30+ years of experience as a top executive of a market-leading growth company and five years of researching the work of hundreds of experts in their fields.

Who the Book is for?
For people who want to:
- Improve business decisions, get better results
- Decrease risk, reduce stress at work
- Do more with less, enhance teamwork
- Grow career, develop organizations

What is Corporate Stupidity?

Corporate Stupidity is not about intellect; rather it refers to those decisions that destroy value to a business that could have reasonably been avoided. The problem is that humans are not naturally aware of their internal decision-making processes. As you will see, that lets mind-bugs have their influence.

What are Mind-bugs?
Mind-bugs are non-conscious defects in the way humans think and make decisions. For example:

- We believe we have figured out the way things are—regardless of evidence to the contrary—and don’t grasp the contradictions between our view and reality.

- We justify conclusions that serve our interests and develop skills of selective evidence-finding and debate.

- We do not see the limitations in our point of view and want to win arguments without examining whether there are problems with our own thoughts.

What Benefits are derived from reading the Book?

- Improve business outcomes in any department, at any level.

- Reduce risk of business, program, and project failures and problems.

- Help people meet the demands of getting more done with fewer resources.

- Make collaboration, change, and growth easier and healthier.

- Allow people to more effectively assess performance, collectively or individually.

- Improve careers by increasing the quality of decisions, plans, and actions.

- Create environments where employees can be both happier and more productive.

- Help us recognize, smile, and empathize with stupid business decisions more readily and move forward more quickly.

What is the Mind-bugs Taxonomy and Reference Chart?

The taxonomy organizes Mind-bugs in 4 dimensions:

1 - Sufficiency: Do I have the correct inputs?

2 - Accuracy: Are the inputs truthful?

3 - Beliefs: How do I color my decision process?

4 - Social: What is the influence of others?

The Mind-Bugs Reference Chart identifies 20 Mind-bugs within the 4 dimensions and helps people to identify their presence in any business environment.

Review
"Decisions, decisions, decisions. We all make critical decisions every day. Yet we rarely have the courage to thoroughly examine the quality of our thinking and its impact on the decision making process. The Cure will open your eyes: it will draw attention to the most common triggers of faulty thinking and, more importantly, present you with tools to eradicate them. Whether you plan to embark on a personal quest to improve the quality of your decisions, or roll out a game-changing decision making revolution throughout your organization, this book will surely inspire you and guide your efforts. The Cure for Corporate Stupidity is a must-read for all business leaders." --Adrian Velazquez, Director, Revenue Growth Management--Global Shopper Development at The Coca-Cola Company

"It is said that all a person truly owns are their actions. We all want our actions to take flight and help us get to our intended goals. Yet they rarely do. If you ever wondered why and how to improve your odds of getting there, this book is a must read. It begins with examples of business decision makers' "pilot errors" and continues with a very readable description of the flaws that infect our ways of thinking--the Mind Bugs. Then delivers an actionable "pre-flight checklist" of questions to ask before making important decisions in order to find the Mind Bugs that might doom our flight plans making a compelling case that it is easier to fix our plans before takeoff. It concludes with an expanded description on the nature of each Mind Bug with vivid examples. If you make or participate in important business decisions this book is a must read. After reading this book you will never take off without referring to the checklist and everyone on board will be better off for it." --Teddy Shalon, Shalon Ventures

Well worth reading
By Kristin Zhivago
I got this book from Larry's PR folks. Unlike so many business books I receive or buy, this one was refreshing and illuminating. So many times, I find myself reading, and thinking, "Well, yes, that's true, but what can my clients do with this? How can I put this to work today, to help someone?" This one is different. This one is well worth reading.

Larry has identified the common "mind bugs" - his trademarked phrase - that cause well-meaning, smart business leaders to make stupid decisions. He has thought this through; he quotes interesting research on the subject; but mostly he has obviously had a lot of experience observing and applying what he's learned.

The book feels a little repetitive, but even when Larry revisits a subject, he adds value. I think he is very aware that people learn different ways, and by providing a little more depth on each area, or looking at it slightly differently, it helps people incorporate his new - and I think very valid - way of thinking.

I found myself underlining so many passages in this book. It's really a book about improving the quality of your thinking, by becoming more mindful, and by changing - ever so slightly but quite effectively - the process you use to think.

He lists four types of Mind-Bugs: Sufficiency Dimension; Accuracy Dimension; Beliefs Dimension; and Social Dimension. For example, the Sufficiency Dimension Mind-Bugs include:
- Informed leader fallacy - the assumption that a leader is better informed just because he/she is a leader
- Source Influence - assigning importance to data just because of the source (so common!)
- Assumption Error - assuming without challenging
- Snap Judgment Defense - self-explanatory
- Shooting the Critics - ditto

I do feel he might have been able to bring these up to a higher conceptual level, to make it easier to remember and avoid the bugs, but no matter. It's worth studying the descriptions and realizing how easy it is to fall into these traps. Plus, Larry really takes two tracks in this book - a description of the bugs, and then advice on how to change your thinking. This is the more prescriptive part of the book, and is at a higher level conceptually. More refined.

I highly recommend this book to any manager or manager wanna-be. There is a lot of wisdom in these pages.

How most companies end up like the one in OfficeSpace!
By Nari Kannan
If you have a job in an Office currently or if you have ever held one, you should watch the movie OfficeSpace at the earliest opportunity! It depicts Corporate Stupidity in very funny ways!

This week I read the book The Cure for Corporate Stupidity by Larry J. Bloom! It's one of the best books I have read recently!

Larry J Bloom's claim is that corporations make stupid decisions and become stupid. He attributes this to a number of Mind-Bugs they have and that makes them do stupid things!

I was in a company, Digital Equipment Corporation in 1986 when it made many of the dumb decisions that Larry is talking about and consequently did not do so well, bought and absorbed by Compaq and then that was bought by HP! The biggest mind bug that DEC had was that mini-computers were there to stay and they did not have to worry about SUN and their even less expensive UNIX workstations. Ironically, SUN Microsystems had the same mind bug that they did not have anything to worry about PC based servers from Dell and HP and now they are part of Oracle as of this writing!

Larry identifies different kinds of mind bugs like the Sufficiency one (assuming that some people or information are sufficient to make the right decisions), the Accuracy one (information or people are accurate), the Beliefs one (wrong beliefs), and the Social One (decisions imposed by social structure within the company). He then prescribes a number of steps to carefully avoid these mind bugs and make the right decision!

Great book with some great information! Now the only mind bug any corporation needs to avoid is that this advice does not apply to them!

Very good read
By EricB
I am not working in the corporate world myself, but I do have opportunity to coach my son who is
quickly moving up in this world. Reading the book has definitely armed me with some new and very valuable
insites of corporate America. I will most certainly pass this book along to my son who should benifit from
the new way of looking at the common problems and finding solutions to them. I highly suggest reading this book.
