About the Author
Lyle C. Brown, Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin, is Professor Emeritus at Baylor University. Other academic experience includes teaching at Mexico City College (now University of the Americas), Texas College of Arts & Industries (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville), and Wayland Baptist College (now Wayland Baptist University). Lyle served as president of the Southwest Council of Latin American Studies. He is co-editor of RELIGION IN LATIN AMERICAN LIFE AND LITERATURE and author or co-author of articles in professional journals, anthologies, and textbooks. His involvement in Texas politics includes participation in precinct, county, and state conventions.

Joyce Langenegger teaches government at Blinn College-Bryan and is the Director of Professional Development. She received her M.A. and J.D. from Baylor University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Fielding Graduate University. She was named the Blinn College-Bryan Academic Faculty Member of the Year for 2014. She has been named to WHO'S WHO AMONG AMERICA'S TEACHERS three times and received a NISOD Award for Teaching Excellence and a "Most Valuable Player" award from San Jacinto College for her work there as a professor and an administrator. Joyce is a frequent workshop presenter on innovative teaching strategies. She practiced law for a number of years and has been involved with politics at the local and state level.

Sonia Garcia, Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara, is Chair of the Political Science Department at St. Mary's University. She has published articles on Latina politics and is a co-author of MEXICAN AMERICANS & THE LAW: EL PUEBLO UNIDO JAM�S SER� VENCIDO (2004). Sonia also is the lead author of POLITICAS: LATINA PUBLIC OFFICIALS IN TEXAS (2007), which examines the first Mexican-American women elected to public office in Texas from various levels of offices.

Ted Lewis, Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin, is Vice President of Academic Affairs at Pellissippi State Community College. He has taught government and political science at the college level for nearly 30 years. He was previously dean of instruction at Loan Star College-Cyfair and Professor, Chair of the Political Science Department, and Director of the Learning Communities Program at Collin County Community College. Dr. Lewis has conducted workshops on Texas election procedure for the Texas Secretary of State and has served as a county party chairperson, on state political party executive committees, and on several statewide candidate campaign advisory committees. He has delivered numerous national presentations and has published articles in such journals as the Community College Journal of Research and Practice, the Journal of the League for Innovation in the Community College, and the National Social Science Journal. He is listed in both WHO'S WHO IN AMERICAN POLITICS and WHO'S WHO AMONG AMERICA'S TEACHERS.

Robert E. Biles, Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, is Professor and former Chair of Political Science at Sam Houston State University. He has published several books and numerous scholarly articles. Bob has served as a professional staff member for the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, a member of the local school board, county political party chair, county election supervisor, state board member of a citizen's lobbying group, a member of advisory committees to the Texas Commissioner of Higher Education and the Texas State Board for Educator Certification, and secretary and president of the Women's Caucus of the Southwestern Social Science Association. He has received four Fulbright grants to teach and do research in Latin America. He received his university's top award for research, his college's award for teaching, and the first university Faculty Senate award for administration.

What you'd expect for a rental

It's pretty much what you'd expect for a rental I got it with obvious water damage so there's that, but over all it's fine and cheaper than getting it from the bookstore

Good book on Texas Government easy to read in Kindle app!

I rented the Kindle version of this book for a summer course of Texas government. One good thing is that by renting the book I only payed a fraction of the price of the new book which is extremely expensive for a student and was unreasonable for me to pay. I only had to download the kindle app in my mac so that I could read it. The kindle app allows for highlighting, adding notes and also has a finder if you need to look for key concepts. The only problem for me was that the minimum rental time was 3-4 months and I honestly only needed the book for 1 month, so I think there should be cheaper short term options. Overall, I am pleased with this product and would recommend it. I did not receive any discount or compensation for my review of this product. My reviews are critical and unbiased and will always reflect my honest opinion of the product. I write my reviews with the only purpose of informing potential buyers and help them make an informed decision.

Don't promise me an access code if I'm not going to get one. Talked to customer service so many times and they sent me to Cengage customer service who then sent me back to Amazon. Thank you so much for making my life incredibly difficult! This course is super rushed, so I'm already behind on assignments.

Drugs, sex and groupies abound in this book by Pearlman, a reporter for Newsday. Only the author isn't a rock critic chronicling the wild escapades of a band; he's describing the very successful 1986 season when the New York Mets won the World Series. As remarkable as the team's performance on the field, the players' escapades outside the stadium are perhaps more memorable, in a far less flattering way. Pearlman, an unabashed Mets fan, offers a behind-the-scenes look at the team, including an insightful portrait of Frank Cashen, the general manager at the time. Pearlman discusses the trades, the players' abilities and unforgettable games. But much of the book is about the difficulties and the unprofessional behavior of many of the players. For example, on one rowdy flight back to New York, United Airlines billed the team an additional $7,500 for damage resulting from food fights and other unruly antics and said the team couldn't fly the airline again. Cashen was upset, but the manager, Davey Johnson, laughed as he tore up the bill in front of the team. The drug use that would become public later was not addressed at the time, though it was obvious to reporters. When asked whether Dwight Gooden was healthy, despite several minor car accidents, Johnson had nothing to say: "As long as Dwight Gooden was smiling and in good physical shape, Johnson required no knowledge about the pitcher's private time. Johnson was a manager, not a babysitter." Pearlman's book isn't simple nostalgia-some of the players have virtually disappeared from the public eye-and much of the wild off-field behavior is still part of the game today. Baseball aficionados, especially Mets fans, will enjoy this affectionate but critical look at this exciting season.

In 1986, the New York Mets won the World Series, taking it from the Boston Red Sox in some of the most memorable baseball ever played. Pearlman doesn't really want to talk about that. He wants to tell you what terribly bad boys these Mets were. There is no boozing, drug use, or bimbo eruption that he does not describe, nor does he miss a single evil quote from one player about another. Doc Gooden's and Darryl Strawberry's silken and glorious talents are not examined nearly so much as their wastrel paths to drug and alcohol use are scrupulously detailed. Rampant sexism and underhanded racism were certainly part of the baseball scene in 1986, but must Pearlman revel in them with such glee? And the prose? Perlman goes purple at the slightest provocation: Bill Buckner's left ankle "throbbed like a transplanted heart." There is a lot not to like here, which is exactly why it will draw media interest and may well become one of the hottest-selling baseball books of the season. GraceAnne DeCandido

It's hard to be a saint in baseball city...

This book was an interesting and fun read. It was great to revisit the 1986 season the Mets won the World Series. I remember myself (as a lifelong Met fan) and the city being so energized by the Mets and the twists and turns of their great season. People talked baseball and Mets on the street, in the subway, at the market. Typically quiet people and people not that interested in baseball jumped into conversations about the games and the possibility of a Pennant and then World Series. It was so much fun to be in NYC and live each and every game.

Eliot, Hart Crane, Theodore Roethke, and William Carlos Williams - despite temperamental and artistic differences was to find an order beneath the surface of visible things. Humanity's quest for cosmic order always has been expressed in dancing 'before words were and when words failed.' For the first time this book shows why and how the dance became central to these poets' perception of experience. All four found models in the poetry of Whitman and Yeats, both lovers of the dance. All four were sensitive to cultural movements, three of which were concurrent with their poetic development: the revitalization of classical ballet, the explosion of modern dance, and the 'mythic renaissance' - a fresh exploration of myth and ritual by scientists and humanists alike. The ties of myth and ritual to dance have been traced in a number of seminal books. It was no coincidence, the author feels, that her chosen poets all knew and admired dancers. Eliot was a balletophile from his Paris student days. At 23 Crane wrote of lsadora Duncan's impact on him: "It was like a wave of life . Rocthke taught at Bennington with Martha Graham and called himself 'dancing-mad.' At 26 Williams wrote a verse tribute to Isadora, and at 72 he still asserted that poetry 'began with the dance.' The Universal Drum begins with an overview of the intellectual and artistic crosscurrents in the early 20th century that provided a congenial climate for the poets' experimentation with language, form, and theme. This introduction is followed by detailed analyses of dance imagery in the poems of Eliot, Crane, Roethke, and Williams. Each was willing to try to give words to gesture, to suspend the workings of the mind for the intuitive experience. Each saw himself - sometimes seriously, sometimes wittily - as a modern shaman dancing order out of chaos.

This unique book is a 'MUST READ' for all college and university students!
In terms of reading strategies covering the broad spectrum of academic disciplines, this is an excellent strategy guide. I would even say, the best in the genre!
The author has done a marvellous job of identifying specialised reading techniques as well as specific thought patterns for readers to anticipate when reading in the academic disciplines.

Chapter 10: Reading in Business;
Chapter 11: Reading Literature;
Chapter 12: Reading Mathematics;
Chapter 13: Reading in the Natural Sciences;

In each chaper, the author even provides ideas and insights to help you adapt your study techniques to each discipline.

Strategy-wise, I would add that this book is an excellent reading companion to Eleanor Leo's 'Powerful Reading, Efficient Learning' and Anne Phillips/Peter Sotiriou's 'Steps to Reading Proficiency', which I had reviewed earlier. Together, they will help college and university students to get more out of what they read. Guaranteed!

How to Read - Overkill!

If you've never been instructed on how to read a textbook before getting to college, then this is for you. It's like beating that dead horse over and over again. The detailed "thought processes" with examples don't even include the transitional words that clue you in to what the process is. Contradicts itself often. This had to be someone's Ph.D. thesis. If I didn't have to take this course, I'd never pick up this book.

Gr 4-6–In this sequel to George Washington's Socks (Scholastic, 1991), the members of the Adventure Club are again transported by rowboat back in time to the American Revolution where 10-year-old Matt and the other boys get caught up in a Patriot spy ring while his younger sister and her friends are rescued by a Loyalist family. The boys are immediately sympathetic to the Patriot cause and agree to help deliver a message concerning the Battle of Dorchester, which they also happen to be learning about in school at the beginning of the story. The girls, on the other hand, are horrified to be staying with “the enemy,” but who is right and who is wrong becomes more complex as the story unfolds. The kids witness the Patriots doing terrible things to the Loyalists and realize that the Torys have reasons for staying loyal to England. Woodruff does an excellent job of conveying the complexities of war, particularly one that pits family against family in a very real way. This is a great introduction to the Revolutionary period, brought to life with historical figures and conflicts through the eyes of today's kids. fun time travel story for 8-12 year olds

Looking for exciting time travel books for your young patrons or students who've read their way through the Magic Tree House, the Time Warp Trio, and others series of that ilk? Elvira Woodruff's George Washington's Spy might just fit the bill for these readers. A magic rowboat at a lake near their home sweeps fifth grader Matt, his annoying little sister Katie, and four friends from their Nebraska home back to 1776 Boston, where they land in a freezing and dark forest and their magic boat quickly disappears. It's a dangerous time, with the British in Boston and George Washington and his troops trying to drive the British from the city.

The boys go to look for help for Katie, who has injured her foot, while the girls remain behind, but with the freezing weather, they must seek shelter when the boys do not quickly come back for them. They are fortunate to be taken in by a kind woman, Mistress Hewson, and her young daughters, who, through a series of funny misunderstandings, believe that the girls are related to the British Earl of Essex. They take the three girls into their home, where they try to blend in by acting "colonial." They soon discover that the family who is so kind to them is a Loyalist family--enemies of George Washington and the Patriots!

And what has become of Matt and his friends? They've been taken prisoner by a group of Patriots, where they meet Benjamin Franklin, and Matt is drawn into George Washington's spy network, complete with letters written in invisible ink, messages hidden in buttons and secret passwords. Can Washington make the British Redcoats leave Boston, and will Matt, Katie, and their friends ever get back home?

The author does not shirk from exploring the complex politics of the time, when even Benjamin Franklin's own family was split, with his son siding with the Tories and the King. Everything is not black and white, like the children thought from history class. Mistress Hewson "may have been a Tory, but she acted like any other mother." At the book's conclusion, the children ponder the moral complexities of the Revolution, wondering how good people like the Hewsons could be America's enemies. "I thought choosing sides would be so simple, but it's not," remarks one of the girls.

While this title is a sequel to Woodruff's George Washington's Socks, there's no problem reading this one without having read the earlier book. I particularly enjoyed how Woodruff weaves real historical figures into the story, including Washington (who makes a brief appearance toward the end) and Franklin. At the beginning it is horrible then once they go back in time it gets a lot better because they were in Boston not playing with MARSHMALLOWS! Overall this is a great and fun book!!
