Wavelet theory originated from research activities in many areas of science and engineering. As a result, it finds applications in a wide range of practical problems. About the Author
Jaideva C. Goswami, PhD, is an Engineering Advisor at Schlumberger in Sugarland, Texas. He is also a former professor of Electronics and Communication Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Dr. Goswami has taught several short courses on wavelets and contributed to the Wiley Encyclopedia of Electrical and Electronics Engineering as well as Wiley Encyclopedia of RF and Microwave Engineering. He has many research papers and patents to his credit, and is a Fellow of IEEE.
Andrew K. Chan, PhD, is on the faculty of Texas A&M University and is the coauthor of Wavelets in a Box and Wavelet Toolware. He is a Life Fellow of IEEE.

Surely a good fundamental book on the subjet

I have been studying in this field for over five years now, and I find the book very comprehensive and fundamental. Compared to most of the popular books on Wavelet analysis, this book touches the subject from its root, and answering some basic questions like what is a wavelet, what is its origin, and how is it is useful for performing Time Scale signal analysis. The best part that I find is that the book perfectly balances a mathematician perspective of the subject matter with that of an Engineer's viewpoint. The reader will find lots of examples, MATLAB codes, illustration and exercises, which are hard to find in other books. The authors have presented the material with a sound theoretical foundation with lots of clearly presented definitions and theorems. The book also introduces a wide range of applications in the field of Signal and Image analysis, data compression, Seismic analysis, etc.
This book has been carefully crafted as opposed to one of those collections of journal articles that just fills in concepts, without explaining them clearly. I would strongly suggest this book for the beginners as well as intermediate level students.

Good idea; too bad about the errors

The book is in general a good idea but has a fatal flaw - it has many math errors. It looks as if the authors took their lectures on signal theory and shoved them into a wavelet context, without stopping to consider what needs changing. It seems every two pages or so is a significant error. This would be ok *if* there were a published errata, but I have found none via google. What good is a book full of errors?

I have a copy of this book, and I enjoyed reading it. I think, the material is given in a very clear and instructive way: important things are explained in great detail, and the exercises are very useful. This book would be very good for self study, and also as an addition to any other textbook on this subject.
