A wonderful guide

I was surprised to see anything but great reviews for this book. This is a wonderful guide for any parent whose child is having sleep problems. It claims to be a common sense method and it certainly is - when you're a sleepless parent you really want a sleep technique that works and that does not require a bunch of mental gymnastics. This workbook format is terrific for the busy (and tired!) parent, it's easy to use, even if you do not have the original book that this workbook is based on (Good Night Sleep Tight).

Perfect for a busy {tired} mom

If you read my review of The Sleep Lady's Good Night Sleep Tight, you know that I absolutely love her technique. I was having some terrible trouble getting my girls to go to bed and sleep through the night and was in desperate need of some help. I followed her techniques and was able to consistently sleep until my alarm went off. That was unheard of in my home. I will be honest and admit that I didn't stick with it like I should have and I still have a terrible time getting my girls to bed, but the technique definitely deserves merit.

This workbook is almost like a "cliff notes" version of Good Night Sleep Tight and is just as essential for a new mom. New moms are tired enough and it can be really difficult to find time to read anything, let alone a 400+ page book about sleeping. So, the condensed version is really a lifesaver. As a matter of fact, when I finished reading through it for my review, I passed it along to my pregnant friend who was thrilled to get it.

This book is perfect for any mom with a kid under the age of 5. The Sleep Lady, Kim West, has techniques all younger aged kids and I would imagine that most of them are just as phenomenal as the two stages that I tried for my girls.

It works. Great book for tired parents. We tried it on my grandson and had success in one week.

My grandson was waking 6-10 times per night at seven months old. He could not go to sleep without being nursed and then putting him into bed woke him up for more crying. My daughter and her husband were completely stumped. While I was visiting I bought her this workbook as well as the book that goes with it. Together, in ONE WEEK, he was going down for 1-1/2 hour naps twice a day and going down for bed (from awake to asleep) in five minutes without being nursed, with just a little complaint (not hard crying) and by the time I left his dad or I could put him down as easily as his mom. The first step was separating nursing from falling asleep. It worked.

These are tried and true sleep training tips and they work. It would be good to have the other book because she refers to it, but the workbook was great for quick lookups. In the end my daughter didn't even need to keep a journal. Her baby learned to fall asleep really, really fast.

Now my grandson is nine months old, takes his naps on time, goes to bed at seven, has one big nursing in the night, goes back to sleep and sleeps until 7 a.m.

Tom Fettke holds degrees from Oakland City College and California State University at Hayward. He has taught music in both public and Christian schools and has served as a church choir director and minister of music in churches large and small for over 30 years. A good look at Big History but not as good as “Journey to civilization"

I picked up this book because I had enjoyed one of Jim Baggott’s previous efforts “Farewell to reality” where he discusses physics. “Origins”, about big history (big bang to the present) did not disappoint. Once again Baggott’s sense of humor shows through (even in the footnotes). I continue to admire Baggott’s ability to clearly specify what is an opinion versus what has been shown. And as in “Farewell to reality” I found some parts too technical, especially the earlier parts of the book explaining the big bang theory. This could be a result of my own bias, as I like biology more than I like physics or chemistry. Nonetheless I like Baggott’s writing style which I generally find conversational and friendly. This is the second big history book I’ve read, the first being Roger P. Briggs’s “Journey to civilization” which I enjoyed more because it is less detailed and easier to read. I recommend “Origins” for readers who prefer a more technical book and “Journey to civilization” for this who prefer a less technical book. Either way, you can’t go wrong.

A Book of Uneven Quality

In the preface and in the book, Dr. Baggott emphasizes that his intent is to write a rigorous scientific account of human origins (a goal that I find very appealing). For the first seven chapters, which cover the origin and evolution of the universe and the solar system, he does an excellent job towards meeting his goal. The writing is clear and interesting, and the content is detailed and authoritative. His accounts of the interstellar molecular material and the evolution of the solar system are the best that I have read; indeed, it is rare to find any coverage of interstellar molecules in other books. These seven chapters are of five star quality.

Unfortunately the remaining five chapters on the evolution of life are of a lower standard. They are, in general, much less detailed, patchy, and give the impression that the author is in a hurry. More troubling, Dr. Baggott sometimes indulges in speculative stories that fall short of scientific rigor. An early example is his notion of how the first living cells might have arisen in alkaline hydrothermal vents. The book ends with a lengthy chapter on human consciousness which is part philosophical and part speculative. Dr. Baggott believes that human consciousness, language, and artistic sensibility evolved 40,000 to 50,000 years ago, some 150,000 years after the appearance of our species, Homo sapiens. He does not explain how this happened. Although this hypothesis has not been shown to be incorrect, recent evidence from multiple sources has generally favored a much earlier development of consciousness and language. These sources include new sites of early representational art, indications of self-consciousness in non-human species, the discovery of the same FOXP2 allele in both the Homo sapiens and Neanderthal genomes, and recognition of artistic sensibility in incredibly beautiful hand axes which date back almost half a million years. Dr. Baggott’s emphasis on the sudden and recent emergence of consciousness ignores the alternative evidence.

As an account of human origins, this book is incomplete, in my opinion. The hugely important migrations of Homo sapiens from Africa to all corners of the world are confined to three pages despite the large amount of detailed evidence that has been obtained from archaeological, genetic, and linguistic studies. The next important event in shaping who we are is the adoption of agriculture which in turn led to sedentary ways of life and the creation of ever larger societies, from villages to today’s near-global societies. These in turn were the incubators and users of new technologies that have had such an enormous impact on the human way of life and on the world in which we live. None of this is included in "Origins".

In an endnote to the Epilogue, Dr. Baggott refers to books on Big History including David Christian’s pioneering book "Maps of Time", he claims that their coverage is less scientific than his. This is perhaps true. On the other hand, Dr. Baggott’s treatment of our origins is less complete: I suggest that you read both books!

Life, the universe and everything

It is only in the last hundred years that we have been able to discuss the origins of the universe with any kind of evidence. All previous discussion came out of myth, philosophy and religion. Even though our understanding is still piecemeal, Jim Baggott has assembled what is fairly certain, into an extraordinary story. There is still a lot of “We just don’t know”, but Baggott’s earned reputation is that he disallows the baseless (See my review of his Farewell to Reality . This is a great relief for those of us who are not astrophysicists and microbiologists.

There’s a lot of physics and chemistry to understand as he tackles the universe. Most of it is subatomic, which is a bit ironic, considering the massive clouds and galaxies we can barely perceive. Nearly halfway through the book, he gets to our solar system.

His explanation of the formation of the solar system is too complicated and unsatisfying, a patchwork of kludges. There is a far simpler, more elegant explanation from astrophysicist Marvin Herndon, who is not referenced at all (though his mentor, Harold Urey, is referenced numerous times). Herndon says that all planets form, not from “accretion” (which Baggott also has trouble with), but from the gas cloud that Baggott calls Neith, which rained-in its elements by force of gravity. This why we keep finding that planets, comets and moons are made of the same materials. The sun, being 99% of the mass of the solar system, had critical mass, and didn’t just shine, it ignited. The planets, all of which were gas giants like Jupiter, reacted according to their distance from the sun. The inner planets got their gas cover blown off, leaving rocky cores, which continue to relax and expand. In the ignition, Mercury also lost a seventh of its mass, which ended up in pieces just beyond the range of the sun’s blast, in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Herndon manages to answer the questions with elegant solutions, while ironically, Baggott relies on standard theory, with its ifs, ands, buts and we-don’t-knows. He says it is “reasonable” to assume that an iron core somehow produces a wandering magnetic field. Unfortunately, the Earth’s core is not iron. He ducks the exciting issue of the planetary cores, which Herndon describes in detail. (For a quick summary of Herndon’s theory, see my review of Maverick's Earth and Universe)

Baggott is on firmer ground when he examines biological history, where things are clearer. From all the evidence, it would have been a miracle if life did not take shape on Earth. The combination of oceans, warmth, light, magma, vents, electrical storms and crashing comets make the chemical interactions that led to life almost a certainty. And it keeps coming back, in radically different shapes and sizes, every time it gets wiped out. Earth is a universe-class incubator.

This telling of Creation is not ironclad, but as usual, Baggott is clear and helpful, and refreshingly doubting where necessary.

Truly mind-opening

I was blown away by the premise of the book. Namely that we can alter the flow of time (or rather our perception of how fast time is flowing) and thereby live for what seems like thousands of years. The author has conveyed this with a lot of conviction and examples. I must have underlined 80% of the book. I felt energized and felt like rereading it as soon as I finished it.

Amazing book! I read it right through- couldn't put it down! It is one of the best paradigm changers I have ever read. I usually read 1-2 business/self help books a week and this is the best yet, a real game changer. He makes relativity come to life and gives an amazing explanation of life changing use of time. This book has not only explanations, but strategies to move your life to an altogether different level of thinking. I will be re-reading this book many more times and practicing the strategies contained in it. Finally a real tool for living at the highest level possible!

This book has been a pleasant surprise. I've been reading Ben's articles from his website, and discovered this book there. I've read quite a number of personal development books, but this book offers certain perspectives of the same things that are really very insightful and the author's own experince is so inspiring and something a lot of people would be able to relate to. I've recommended this book to a lot of my friends, and I beleive time spent reading this book is time well spent. I will definitely read this again, such a page turner.

Excellent But Not Elementary

General metaphysics is a difficult and central area of philosophy. While there is a lot of literature devoted to it, I do not think that there are very many introductory texts. Michael Loux's "Metaphysics: A Contemporary Introduction" fills a gap.
This book is devoted exclusively to general metaphysics; there is no discussion of the subjects of special metaphysics, such as the existence of God, the nature of mind, and free will. The subjects covered are the nature of universals, substance, propositions, modality, persistence through time, and the Realism/Anti-Realism debate.
Loux explains the different theories about these subjects and evaluates arguments for and against these theories. The focus is on the contemporary literature; however, some historical background is provided. While the coverage is comprehensive, depth is not sacrificed.
The chapters are well-organised, each beginning with a brief chapter overview and concluding with suggestions for further reading. Loux style is clear and friendly.
While introductory, this book is not elementary. It is intended for students who have already attended an introductory philosophy course. Those without any previous exposure to contemporary analytic philosophy may find it very difficult.
I recommend this book strongly for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in philosophy. Readers may also be interested in Loux's anthology, "Metaphysics: Contemporary Readings".

A gateway to current metaphysics...

Anyone interested in the issues that make up current debates in metaphysics should read this book. It opens up an entirely new vocabularly and conceptual scheme for those with little or no prior knowledge of the subject. Working through the chapters, arguments, and positions will greatly facilitate comprehension of more technical philosophical papers. At the same time the book presents the material in a technical fashion; it reads like real philosophy, as it should. Arguments receive in depth treatment and important sides to issues get presented fairly. For a beginner, this book will present many challenges. But overcoming these will reap great rewards. Probably the best thing to do after completing the book is to read it again. Of course this principle holds true for a lot of philosophy books, but since this one builds a foundation a second deep reading becomes almost essential.

Seven chapters cover some of the biggest issues in metaphysics. Each chapter builds on its predecessors, so the book doesn't hold up well to random browsing. It should be comprehended linearly. Starting off, the nearly ancient debate between nominalists and realists (with a small 'r') fills two chapters. Arguments for and against both positions take up most of the space (e.g., abstract entities, predication, Ockham's Razor, etc., along with a delineation of the various types of nominalism - austere, metalinguistic, trope theory). Chapter three discusses the arguments relating to the nature of concrete particulars, or the 'substratum' versus the 'bundle' theory. The nature of propositions gets a fair shake in chapter four; are they abstract necessarily existing entities or just talk about regular old concrete objects? Next, David Lewis' eyebrow-raising view of possible worlds and modality is coherently outlined in chapter five. Here the discussion get really juicy and complex. Modality is no picnic. Do possible worlds actually exist in the same manner of our own world or are possible worlds merely potential actual worlds that never obtained the level of an 'actual world'? Chapter six revisits the concrete particulars examined in chapter three, but now with the element of time included. Two views, endurantism and perdurantism, are juxtaposed along with two theories of time, presentism and eternalism. Finally, chapter seven gets to the bottom of many of the book's debates, which can be, cursorily, ground down to the question of human beings' connections between language and the world. Do languages actually refer to a mind-independent world or is the world we talk about inextricably linked to our sensory and conceptual processes? These questions explode in the debate between Realists (this time with a capital 'R') and anti-Realists. Anti-Realists challenge the 'traditional' notion of a direct connection between language and a mind-independent world. The idea of the 'inscrutablility of reference' (from W.V.O. Quine, though with a specific interpretation by the author and Hilary Putnam) provides meat for the anti-Realist's argument. This final chapter sees Realists and anti-Realists duking it out over these issues. The chapter, and the entire book, provide plenty of food for the brain to chew on.

Throughout the book, the author argues for an Aristotelian-flavored "being 'qua' being" approach to metaphysics. This is very apparent in the book's excellent introduction as well as in the final chapter (aptly titled "The challenge of anti-Realism"). Though he makes his preference explicit, the arguments against his position still get a very fair shake. The author's position in no way degrades the quality of for-and-against delineation of arguments. So, even if readers do not agree with the author's overall stance, they can still obtain much useful knowledge.

Though the book's subtitle reads "a contemporary introduction" it is not an easy read. Major universities have used it for courses (the University of Minnesota's Philosophy department used it in a 5-XXX level class). Still, the book is not inaccessible to any careful general reader. It just takes some work. And that work, especially to someone seeking an entryway into the foundations of current metaphysical debates, will pay off in droves.

Well written and lucid

This is an excellent introduction to contemporary metaphysics. You cannot put this book down without clearly understanding the many shades of Realism and Nominalism. The chapters on necessity and possibility were excellent.
For me, at least, there is the glaring omission of any sort of contribution that A. Whitehead (the 20th century's pre-eminent metaphysician)made to the field, but that's understandable in an introductory text.
This is philosophy. Go for it.

Three stars hides a polarised opinion of the short stories in this anthology: some were excellent, wonderfully-written, thought-provoking and transported me away to a different world. Others left me cold, or worse, alienated, wondering what on earth the author was on about. Maybe I am just dense in some way, but I do wonder where the skill is in writing something so obscure that it's not even remotely accessible to a well-read general audience.

Having said that, I'll continue to read such anthologies as it does draw the attention to one or two new writers worth watching out for.
