Review

“The First Historians is a book that no one with serious interest in biblical scholarship can afford to neglect. Halpern is one of the most fertile, exuberant, and audacious minds of his generation. He is witty, learned, and outrageous in turn, a Momigliano of Hebrew historiography. One learns more from one book by Halpern than from a dozen by his plodding peers.”

—Frank Moore Cross, Harvard University

“With characteristic imagination, erudition, and wit, Halpern challenges the established understanding. . . of the Former Prophets. His designation of those books as historiography will surprise those who think that genre began with the Greeks. No one concerned with the roots of historical thinking in the West or with the relationship of the Bible to history can afford to miss this extraordinary volume.”

—Jon D. Levenson, Harvard Divinity School

“It is an impressive and extremely important book. My only regret is that someone didn’t write these things long ago. Halpern shows himself to be a master of literature, history, Semitic linguistics, ancient Near Eastern texts, and archaeology. No one in his generation controls all of these tools of the trade as Halpern does.”

—Richard Elliott Friedman, University of California, San Diego

Based on a Faulty Foundation
By Jonathan Bailey
While artfully written and scientifically organized and referenced (thereby preventing me from giving only one star), This book, though trying to advance the idea that historiography began with the Hebrews and not the Greeks, is operating within the framework of thinking created by humanistic German bible scholars of decades ago. The cornerstone of the book is Martin Noth's adaptation of Julius Wellhausen's Documentary Hypothesis, which states that the Torah and Early Prophets (Genesis through Kings) is a patchwork of collected traditions that has nothing to do with traditional notions of authorship or revelation. Wellhausen synthesized the idea that Torah was a conflation of 4 separate documents from various stages of the Israelites' invention of their religion, while Noth claimed that Deuteronomy through Kings was all written as one document as a forgery to prop up the reign of King Josiah. Though Halpern in this book is attempting to find critical historical method in the compilation of the alleged forgery of King Josiah, he is operating on the foundations of Wellhausen and Noth, whose ideas sprang from perceived problems in the structure of the Hebrew text, which themselves sprang from a complete ignorance of Semitic poetic and prose structures. Since the publications of their ideas, doublets (duplications and 'retellings' of certain segments of text), the main 'difficulty' they found in the text, have been found in all types of Semitic literature (even the Greek New Testament) and are now considered to be proper Semitic style, rather than evidence that multiple sources were cut and pasted together. So while Halpern is trying to advance some interesting ideas, he is basically engaged in dialogue with a segment of the academic society which has not yet learned to abandon these faulty principles of analyzing the structure of ancient Semitic literature. This book should be avoided on that basis.

Important arguments that yet need more to bear the weight of the thesis
By E. L. Bess
Halpern's *The First Historians* is a work unlike most other works of biblical scholarship in that (a) its author is truly a trained historian with a precious competency and (b) it gets down to basic methodological issues about history and history-writing, not only as it pertains to the biblical writers, but modern scholars as well, four types of which Halpern makes out as hostile to history and history-writing in varying degrees: fundamentalists, negative fundamentalists, 'Pyrrhonists' and source critics. He criticizes each, though understandably he's gentler with source critics.

Chapters 3 & 4 are case studies demonstrating how biblical writers utilized their sources to indite genuine histories. (intentionally anyway) Then comes Part 2. Halpern shows, or attempts to show (it is not my place to judge if he succeeds), how redactional techniques in the Deuteronomistic history indicate historical interests, not romantic interests. But first he interacts with the views of other scholars on the structure of the Deuteronomistic history. Frank Moore Cross's double redaction theory, even in Halpern's presentation, seems to have the most explanatoral power to its advantage as well as parsimony within that power, and Halpern nitpicks at it unnecessarily in my opinion. One can't help but be impelled by Halpern's hawk's eyes, but there's an irresistible feeling, slight but admitting of reservation, that he expects his biblical historian made, like he accuses his peers of expecting redactors of making, 'unreasonable demands on the analytical skills of his audience.' [174; cf. 243-4, 275ff.] Still, the logic behind his criticisms of other views stands, broadly, to reason. To those scholars who break up the texts into too many redactional layers on the charge of inconsistence, Halpern reacts not so politely: 'Such hypotheses are only a final refuge for readers who cannot contrive a coherent reading: like Hupfeld's R in the Pentateuch, oblivious to all the problems that combining sources entailed, they are unconscious by-products of literary, not historiographic, analysis; they imply stupidity or dishonesty in an ancient author, but call down doubt only upon themselves.' [139]

So not to mislead, it should be clarified that Halpern is not adverse to source criticism of the bible, only to its abuse. (see pp. xxiv-vi) For this chapter 2 is a good explanation for the origins of source criticism and a history of Hebrew bible scholarship, highlighting Wellhausen and Noth. But strikingly, instead of seeking to undermine the historical truth of the bible, source criticism 'had been a rearguard action against Enlightenment attacks on the Bible.' [19] On the other hand, it should also be stated that Halpern is nothing like an apologist for the biblical tradition: 'The idea that biblical literature, of whatever genre, is anything more than human, intended for humans, subject to interpretation by humans, and thus riddled with error, is a fantasy.' [xxii]

In Part 3, the last, Halpern discusses the various kinds of sources his Deuteronomistic historian used with proofs of their accuracy as sustained by external evidence. He selected and presented what subserved his theological agendas; however, his biases were controlled by his sense of the evidence. He rarely resorted to thin-air inventions. 'Our historian,' he writes, 'and some of the authors whose work he used, believed that the evidence sustained their historical theses.' [242] But there is tension in Halpern's own thesis. Again, the Deuteronomistic historian 'riddles his texts with doublets and inconsistencies. All this is better explained on the hypothesis that H(Dtr) wrestled with his sources than it is on the hypothesis that he composed sheer fantasy in an inconsistent fashion. No Israelite narrator evinces an aesthetic predilection for self-contradiction. Had H(Dtr) concocted the history, he would have gone to the trouble of keeping it consistent.'

If Halpern's historian could permit conflicts in the narrative, why couldn't a redactor?...the very kind of redactor other scholars seek to demonstrate operated in the Deuteronomistic history that Halpern had strong words against? (see 138-40) Can it be that Halpern 'cannot contrive a coherent reading'? An apparent tension like this simply can't be explained away with the vague rationalization that the Deuteronomistic historian 'wrestled with his sources.'

Rather, the sophistication Halpern reads in the history probably reflects more of his own than that of the actual biblical writer. Halpern anticipated that scholars would find his points 'unduly generous'. [278] Outright munificent in some compartments of his thesis, in my view; and I was still disappointed that he never tells us who the Deuteronomistic history was written for. Nevertheless, this is a volume that can't be missed and which all students of the bible must 'wrestle' with themselves.

Fun Fact:

* The 1996 paperback edition is missing part of note 13 and notes 14-26 for chapter 5!

Enjoyable book presents recent ideas in Biblical criticism.
By James B. Williams
Halpern is well known and is always enjoyable to read. This book is an excellent introduction to the ideas of this important Textural Critic. Halpern describes the “Deuteronomist,” a person (or group) that has collected together the material that forms the bulk of the Biblical histories of Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Kings. His thesis is plausible and consistent and has been supported by recent archeological work by Finkelstein and others. His writing is detailed and specific but his wit and humor always keep the reader interested.
Due to their subject matter, biblical archaeology and criticism have been alternately plagued and supported by religion and politics. Halpern, Finkelstein and their associates are often under attack, not always because of their arguments and research, but rather on the basis of religious beliefs and Middle Eastern politics. (...).
Time will tell if further developments will support or contradict Halpern’s position. Nevertheless, whether you agree with his position or not, Halpern’s book gives an exciting glimpse into one of the most important current trends in Biblical archeology and criticism.

You are holding in your hands the most famous book of magic written in America

Originally published in 1820 near Reading, Pennsylvania, under the German title Der Lange Verborgene Freund, this text is the work of immigrant Johann George Hohman. A collection of herbal formulas and magical prayers, The Long-Lost Friend draws from the traditional folk magic of Pennsylvania Dutch customs and pow-wow healers.

This is authentic American folk magic at its best―household remedies combined with charms and incantations to cure common ailments and settle rural troubles. The most well-known grimoire of the New World, this work has influenced the practices of hoodoo, Santeria, Paganism, and other faiths. In this, the definitive edition, you'll find:

  • Both the original German text and the 1856 English translation
  • More than one hundred additional charms and recipes, taken from the pirated 1837 Skippacksville edition and others
  • Extensive notes on the recipes, magic, Pennsylvania Dutch customs, and the origin of many of the charms
  • Indices for general purposes and ingredients
  • Explanations of the specialized terminology of illnesses

Whether your interest lies in folklore, ethnobotany, magic, witchcraft, or American history, this classic volume is an essential addition to your library.

Great, but buy the print version
By Susannah
This is, for now, without a doubt the definitive version of the Long Lost Friend. If you have any interest in Braucherei, Hoodoo, Conjure, Pennsylvania Dutch folk practices, and/or the history of magical practices in this country, this is a fundamental text. If you decide to acquire a copy of this book, you should have this edition for its inclusiveness and its scholarship.

However, I can't recommend the kindle version, which I've found almost impossible to work with. There are hundreds of footnotes (and you will want to read them) but they are not hyperlinked so you will have to navigate to the end of the book and then back, and you will have to do this numerous times on nearly every page. I find this slow and difficult, in fact nearly impossible. Footnotes are often a problem in kindle editions, but this is the first I've found where you're left to make your way to the back of the book without any help at all. This is an issue the publisher should decidedly address, because many people like myself will want the convenience of having a kindle copy as well as a print copy.

A Grimoire, American Style
By Rob Hardy
It is a chaotic world out there, and we may often be fooling ourselves that we are in control of what happens to us within it. The forces of randomness are constantly at work in ways none of us can completely understand, but we like to feel we are calling the shots. Even when we are not really in charge, we like to think we are, and we like philosophies and books that tell us how to overcome the chaos. Not all of these ways of thinking can be correct; think of all the religious believers in all ages certain that their particular beliefs are controlling things, but even if one religious belief is the right one and enabling such control, the control offered by the others must then be illusory. That isn't to say that illusory control isn't important. Take, for instance the book _The Long Lost Friend_, which is "perhaps the most influential and well known of all the grimoires, or books of magic, to originate in the New World." This is according to Daniel Harms, a researcher who concentrates on magic and folklore, and who has annotated the most authoritative edition of the book, _The Long Lost Friend: A 19th Century American Grimoire_ (Llewellyn Publications). This edition is heavily annotated and bears the editor's explanatory and introductory essays, but there can be no doubt that some will be using it for the purpose for which it was originally printed in 1820, and then translated into English first in 1846 with the subtitle _A Collection of Mysterious and Invaluable Arts and Remedies, for Man as Well as Animals: Of Their Virtue and Efficacy in Healing Diseases, etc._ The book remains a resource for spells in Hoodoo and paganism. It has entered the digital age; not only are its spells available online, but Harms says "the proprietor of a popular online spiritual supply shop has listed Hohman's book as one of her two top sellers."

This curious work, however, is not a throwback to a pre-Christian pagan tradition. Like most grimoires, this one harnessed the best available supernatural beliefs, Christian and specifically Catholic. Typical is a "A good remedy to stop Bleeding," which consists of saying three times, "This is the day on which the injury happened. Blood, thou must stop until the Virgin Mary bring forth another son." The author of the original, John George Hohman, thought he was doing religious business. Looking at the long list of remedies, a reader can learn what sorts of worries bothered those who consulted this book of charms. For colic, you were to say, "I warn ye, ye colic fiends! There is one sitting in judgment, who speaketh: just or unjust. Therefore beware, ye colic fiends!" A remedy for colic subsequently listed (I suppose if this first malediction didn't work) involved some good old rye whiskey and a pipe full of tobacco. If you needed a general protection, then "Whoever carries the right eye of a wolf fastened inside of his right sleeve, remains free from all injuries." There were many charms against assault by gunfire or by knife. "I conjure thee, sword, sabre, or knife, that mightest injure or harm me, by the priest of all prayers, who had gone into the temple at Jerusalem, and said; an edged sword shall pierce your soul that you may not injure me, who am a child of God." Hohman includes this in a list of several charms for the same thing, and seemed not to realize that if one of the charms really worked, all the others would be superfluous. There were similar recitals that would keep witches away, and one that sounds like it was the sort of things witches would be good at doing, called "A Charm for Bad People," which goes like this: "It is said, that if you suspect a person for badness, and he sits down in a chair, and you take a shoemaker's wax-end, that has not been used, and stick one end of it on the underside of the chair, and you sit on the other end of it, he will immediately make water, and in a short time die." One charm would help with legal matters; anyone who has to go to court, "let him take some of the largest kind of sage and write the names of the 12 apostles on the leaves, and put them in his shoes before entering the courthouse, and he shall certainly gain the suit."

There may be some useful household lore here. If you are stung by a bee, it cannot hurt to apply an onion to the sting, and maybe there are chemicals in the onion to affect the pain; this particular treatment is still current, and was recommended by Ann Landers. There are suggestions for dying cloth red, blue, or green. The more interesting claims, however, are the ones that call upon supernatural forces, which show the worries that were current in Hohman's time. This remarkable book was so popular that it engendered its own folklore; Harms says, "According to some traditions, possession of the book, or even touching a copy, would lead to crows, including one transformed witch, roosting on the roof of the owner's house." I cannot say that crows have happened to my roof since I have had my review copy, but I can testify to one of its other charms. Hohman writes, "Whoever carries this book with him, is safe from all his enemies, visible or invisible; and whoever has this book with him, cannot die without the holy corpse of Jesus Christ, nor drowned in any water, nor burn up in any fire, nor can any unjust sentence be passed upon him." Holy corpse or not, this has all come to pass for me just as Hohman foretold.

A Long Lost Friend Returns - Better Than Ever
By Mark Stavish, The Institute for Hermetic Studies
I am no stranger to The Long Lost Friend, having been raised around it, with my great-grandfather Augustus Tischler (Plymouth, Pennsylvania) having been a practitioner of the art. I believe that this intimacy with the works of folk and medieval magic as it has survived into Twentieth Century America played a large part in my being asked to write the jacket-copy for Joseph Peterson's edition of The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses (Ibis Press 2008), and the Introduction to The Red Church by Christopher Bilardi. What Peterson did for this ancient text of Faustian magic, a magic Augustus was familiar with, and to which I have several of the amulets used by my great-aunts as well, I am certain Harms has done for The Long Lost Friend – restored it to a place of respect and practicality to new generations seeking knowledge of traditional practices. Like The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses, The Long Lost Friend has gone through several editions, with many of the names, sigils, and even facts of the book being muddled and lost. Peterson's Introduction provides a very important historical overview of the book, followed by an English translation and German original annotated extensively by Harms. It is critical to both the scholarly reader and would be practitioner to read these notations as they add very valuable contextual and practical information to this text and the nearly forgotten age in which it arose and came to prominence. Less than twenty-four hours after receiving this review copy in the mail I came across an inexpensive paperback copy from the 1920s while walking through a flea market less than one mile from where I live. Because of the quality of paper these books were printed on few survived more than a few decades, and I have never come across one in all of my travels. Now, in two days, two copies arrive on my doorstep. With that omen in mind I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to examine this work of Hohman, Harms, and Peterson, and can positively state that anyone with a serious interest in Pennsylvania German folk magic in particular (also known as 'pow-wow' or 'braucherei'), Southern Hoodoo, Root, or Conjure magic, or even the anthropology of ideas will be very happy to have this edition of The Long Lost Friend as a resource.

Pathophysiology
By Hidemasa Yamaguchi
I think this book has been originally written for professional medical practitioners. However the book also provides a layman like me with valuable medical info concerning various ailments and diseases Reading of the book sometimes reminds me of need to look up a medical dictionary like Dorland's for some technical words but following such check-up I could grasp the content. I'd like to point out that an interesting thing aout the book is forward-positioning of Chapter 2 handling of Genetic Disease in the book composition and that the Chap 2 is followed by the section on Immune system, infectious disease and so on. I found this arrangement of chapters very interesting and very informative. Currently I'm in the middle of reading the book authored by Dr. Peter D'Adamo who is expert on blood group study. By rcross-eferring between two books, your understanding of pathophysiology will be further enhanced.,

Excellent!
By Becky Martinez
I bought this hymnal because I got tired of not having one if I got to mass later than the early arrivals. But now I am in the choir and I get to make my own notations. I am so glad that I bought it. I only wish that when a song is a 2 pager, that I didn't have to turn the page, but that it started on the left side page and continued on the right hand page. It makes it easier to play the tamborine or claves and still sing.

This volume arrived very quickly and I was pleasantly surprised at its condition. I really could not tell that this was a used book. Considering some other offerings were priced above $50, I could not be more pleased at the quality and service.

Review
"There's nothing this programmer likes more in a book than a structured, logical layout, and Modern Compiler Design has it by the bucketful. [...] this excellent book covers not just procedural languages, but object-oriented, functional, logic and parallel/distributed languages too. [...] a well-written and thorough book [...] recommended for the compiler novice." - David Johns in Application Development Advisor, Nov/Dec 2000

From the Back Cover
A compiler is one of the most vital parts of a computer?s system software, translating programs written in a high-level language into low-level commands that the machine can understand and execute. Most compiler design books focus only on techniques for imperative (or procedural) languages like C or Pascal, whereas Modern Compiler Design also covers compilation techniques for object-oriented, functional, logic and distributed languages. Features of the book include:

  • A focus on essential traditional and advanced techniques common to all language paradigms, giving readers the skills required for modern compiler construction.
  • Coverage of all the major programming language types - imperative, object-oriented, functional, logic and distributed languages.
  • A practical emphasis on implementation and optimization techniques, including tools for automating compiler design.
  • A strong intuitive style, illustrated by many practical examples.
All the authors are experienced teachers and researchers in programming languages and their implementation and have acquired a wealth of experience in compiler construction for a variety of languages. This experience has also been reflected in previous texts on Programming Languages, Programming Distributed Systems and Parsing Techniques.

Good bits but somewhat boring
By Andrei Formiga
Yes, this is a good text about compilers, mainly about theory. It has good insights into the area of compiler design, and it approaches many topics with ideas that aren't common in compiler books. However, many of these topics are only touched upon, with no depth, requiring you to look for other references.

Other very good feature of the book is covering compilation of languages from other paradigms. Most compiler books are geared towards mainstream imperative and object-oriented languages. This one has chapters on compilation of functional, logic and parallel programming languages as well. There is ample evidence that declarative programming paradigms in general, and functional programming in particular, are becoming ever more important in the computing industry, and this trend should go on. After all, throughout all the history of computing, the trend was always to go for more abstraction and less implementation details. So it's important to take contact with other paradigms.

Ok, so it's good in general. But it is incredibly boring to read, and I say that as someone who's very into compilers and own a lot of books on the subject. As another reviewer said, the text is often convoluted and hard to read; the organization is mostly good, but it tends to have big sections and big chapters (some very big chapters). Add to that the completely uninspiring layout and typography -- really, it's a very dull and bland look -- and I had serious trouble to read some chapters. Besides, the pseudo-code notation is really bad; better typography for the pseudo-code sections could help too.

To sum it up, if you only have to buy a single book on compilers, I would recommend against this one. Try "Engineering a Compiler" by Cooper & Torczon or wait the new edition of the dragon book by Aho et al. This one is good maybe as a second book, to get complementary insights and new ideas to explore about compilers, especially if you are researching on them, or looking for new ideas to escape from the mainstream.

But if there's ever another edition of this book, I would seriously recommend the authors to rethink its layout and typography to make it more attractive, get help with improving the text and break some chapters and sections in more maneageable pieces. Then it would be a really great book about compilers.

Requires additional references
By James Sullivan
I bought this book as an introduction to Compiler Design and to that end I have found it quite useful. The material is dense, so expect to have to re-read chapters quite often. Also, I have found it necessary to supplement this book with additional resources to fully understand what Grune is attempting to explain, particularly with chapter 3, which covers attribute grammars. The book's english can be poor sometimes so expect to have to back-track over convulted sentences. Overall, however, this book succeeds in being useful as an introduction to the theory. The authors skip implementation details, so if you are expecting to be able to actually write a compiler when you are done, you are going to be needing additional sources.
Pros: 1)great introduction to theory and maintains enough detail in each section to keep you interested. 2) Book is organized well. Each chapter represents the next step in compiler design. 3) This book covers theory, not implementation...it does not bind itself to one particular language
Cons: 1) Expect to check-out or buy additional reading to supplement this book. 2) The english often leaves something to be desired. 3) The excercises at the end of each chapter were obviously just "thrown-in" at the end. They are quite poor.

A book designed for readers interested in the environment, this is an excellent source for Earth science information about hazardous Earth processes which affect virtually everyone living on this planet. Interesting and well-written, this book includes broad coverage of many natural hazards, including earthquakes, volcanoes, flooding, landslides, coastal erosion, extreme weather, and wildfires. For those interested in a comprehensive book about our environment and the impact of natural hazardous processes; also useful as a reference work for science writers and editors.

About the Author

Edward A. Keller

Ed Keller is a professor, researcher,  writer, and most importantly, mentor and teacher to undergraduate and graduate students. Currently, Dr. Keller's students are working on earthquake hazards, how waves of sediment move through a river system following disturbance, and geologic controld on habitat to endangered southern steelhead trout. He was born and raised in California (Bachelor’s degree in Geology and Mathematics from California State University at Fresno, Master’s degree in Geology from University of California at Davis), it was while pursuing his Ph.D. in Geology from Purdue University in 1973 that Ed wrote the first edition of Environmental Geology, the text that became the foundation of the environmental geology curriculum. Ed joined the faculty of the University of California Santa Barbara in 1976 and has been there since, serving multiple times as the chair of both the Environmental Studies and Hydrologic Science programs. In that time he has been the author on over 100 articles, including seminal works on fluvial processes and tectonic geomorphology. Ed’s academic honors include the Don J. Easterbrook Distinguished Scientist Award, Geological Society of America (2004), Quatercentenary Fellowship from Cambridge University, England (2000), two Outstanding Alumnus Awards from Purdue University (1994, 1996), A Distinguished Alumnus Award from California State University at Fresno (1998), the Outstanding Outreach Award from Southern California Earthquake Center (1999).

Ed and his wife Valery, who brings clarity to his writing, love walks on the beach at sunset and when the night herons guard moonlight sand at Arrroyo Burro Beach in Santa Barbara.

Robert H. Blodgett

Bob Blodgett is Professor of Geology at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas, where he teaches natural hazards and disasters, environmental, physical, and historical geology, as well as environmental science, and manages the college’s Edwards Aquifer monitoring well and is physical sciences safety coordinator. Bob has nearly 25 years of teaching experience, including positions on the faculties of Ohio State University and Dickinson College.

He is a Licensed Professional Geoscientist and worked for six years in the state of Texas Public Drinking Water Program leading a team of scientists evaluating the vulnerability of drinking water to contamination, and for two years at the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology conducting environmental assessments of abandoned mined lands. His research on terrestrial sedimentary processes resulted in published papers on braided streams, ancient soils, and fossil burrows.

Bob has practical experience planning for and responding to natural hazards. While in the Air Force he served as the disaster preparedness officer for the remote Indian Mountain Air Force Station in Alaska, and for the underground Cheyenne Mountain Command post of the North American Aerospace Defense Command in Colorado Springs.

He traces his interest in natural hazards back to Alma Petrini, his second grade teacher in Detroit, whose lesson on volcanoes and earthquakes came alive with stories and pictures of her trips to Paricutin and Pompeii, and to lava samples that Gordon Macdonald, then director of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, sent him for his class project. These experiences led to a life-long interest in geology including three degrees, a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, an M.S. from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin.

Bob and his partner Jeff, who helps him focus on the important things in life, enjoy traveling, exploring new restaurants, and making a home with their dog Mona.

Kindle formatting is terrible
By Stephen S
Just be aware that the printed book is nice and organized breaks up long sections of text with ample diagrams and pictures. Depending on how you size your text and columns in the Kindle app, you could end up reading several pages of text before you get to see the diagram the text may be referring to. This was a deal for me at less than half the price of the printed text, but would not have been worth it at any other price.

One stop shopping for natural hazards
By Matt Carter
This is a highly organized and concise book on natural hazards. There's a little too much time spent gushing on some pioneer of the field here and there, but Keller constrains himself reasonably enough. This book makes a nice reference and it boils what are each very large areas of science all by themselves into digestible chapters that don't require you to be an expert in the field. It's a keeper.

natural hazards
By bv10
very well written book and an easy read. I find myself reading through it just because it is so informational and especially with all the weather and natural hazards that have been happening around the nation I can apply to my current classes.
