Where You Post Your Resume Makes a Difference
Let’s say that again: where you post your resume makes all the difference in the world. Research has discovered that the number of face-to-face interviews that employers need to conduct before they find someone they want to hire, stays pretty constant—around 5.4—once they’ve sifted through all the resumes or applications. So, to conserve their energy, they instinctively ask themselves, “Where would I have to sift through the least number of resumes, before I decide who to do those 5.4 interviews with?” Fortunately, we know the answer. Somebody did a study.
If employers post their vacancy on a job-board such as Monster.com or CareerBuilder.com, they typically have to look through 219 resumes from job-hunters who respond, before they find someone to interview and hire.
If employers consider resumes from job-hunters who come through social media sites, such as LinkedIn or Facebook, they typically have to look through 116 resumes, before they find someone to interview and hire.
If employers post their vacancy on their own website, they typically have to look through 33 resumes from job-hunters who respond, before they find someone to interview and hire.
And if the job-hunter takes the initiative to find a very specific job, rather than waiting to find a vacancy, and does this, say, by typing the name of that kind of job into a search engine, then sending resumes to any companies whose name turns up, employers only have to look through 32 applications, before they find someone to interview and hire.
And if the job-hunter takes even more initiative, chooses a company where they’d like to work, and gets a referral (i.e., gets some employee within that company to recommend them), employers have to look through only 10 such candidates, before they find someone to interview and hire.

good advice for job seekers

A lot of good advice for job seekers. The author does not focus on a single group, such as new college grads, inexperienced workers, career changers, etc. Each chapter provides something for everyone. He strongly emphasizes the thorough and proper use of social media (LinkedIn, Facebook and any website where potential employers can learn about you). Everyone should read this chapter and take his advice seriously. The chapters that focused on more spiritual advise were not useful to me, but might be valuable to other readers.
I found a lot of valuable information in the book and also got validation of some of the tactics I had already been using. Job hunting is time-consuming and expensive. The $15 or so that you will pay for this book is well worth it.

Not what I was hoping for

I am 28 years old, stuck at a dead-end job, and have been ready to leave for a few years, but I don't want to keep jumping around and being unhappy. I'd been doing a lot of personality tests, career aptitude tests, searching online, trying to figure out what I could go back to school for, etc.
I came across this book online and decided to give it a shot because of the great reviews. It would also be something I could add to my research. My initial assumption was that there would be some personality tests in this book, eventually giving you a color category (as the title seems to suggest), to use as a guide for what career fields could be best for you in that color grouping. I would have found this to be more useful, because giving me a list of jobs based on my personality color code that I could research would have been beneficial. A simple point the right direction. Unfortunately, this was not what it was at all. It involves a lot of projects, lists, thinking, and time. One project even suggests to take weeks to finish it if need be. I found myself being more frustrated and lost more than anything. The projects are very extensive and I feel like they are almost a distraction. I just wanted to get through them because I kept waiting for the book to get more interesting or helpful, but it just seemed to drone on and on about techniques that I feel would just simply not work. Once I finally finished my flower to the best of my ability, it gives you a Holland Code, which ultimately pulled up next to nothing when I tried to research my code. Things like Architecture, and Construction? I feel like those are so generic and not fitting of my personality at all. I found myself using the examples a lot for my tables, because the lists seem to become repetitive and I would run out of ideas pretty quickly. This was frustrating also because I felt like I wasn't being true to myself having to keep using the examples to come up with ideas. I knew there would be little tests in this book, but nothing like what I expected. I got bored quickly and really had to force myself to get through it.
I wanted this book to help me so bad, but it ultimately left me in the same place I was before. Frustrated, clueless, and back to what I was doing before. These tips would be good I think for people who are not shy. I'm not shy, but I'm also not a pushy person. It stresses not to be 'pushy', but I feel like that's exactly what it would be. For a more reserved person like me, I'm not going to walk into a place I'd like a job and ask them to create one for me. Most people would look at you like you are nuts if you tried to do that. It just seems bizarre to me. I feel like this was a key point in the book--to be outgoing. Get out there and get yourself known. Step out of your comfort zone. I have no interest in doing that. I would just like a step in the right direction, not tips on how to annoy people. Even the interviewing tips were a bit out there. I sat there and thought about all the interviews I'd been in over the past few years and I just feel like the tips would have made the interviewers think I was a total jerk with outrageous demands. One of the tests was also based solely around "all of the places you've lived"...ok, well I've lived in two places in my life, 5 minutes from each other. How can a whole petal of the flower be based on "all these different places" if you haven't lived all over the country? Again, frustrating.
I was hoping this book would help point me in the right direction, but it didn't. It genuinely made me sad that I spent so much time doing the exercises and reading, got all the way to the end, knowing nothing different then before.
I see that it's a best-seller, and that people rave about this and have "turned their lives around", so, what did I miss here?

I gift out this book! Perfect for MILITARY!

I love this book. After 16 yrs in the military, I still couldn't figure out exactly what type of job I might pursue. I didn't want to fall into the traditional post-military job routine. I know guys who have retired after their 20 years and then go to work 1 week after retirement, working in almost the same field they were in their whole careers! Why? For the ease for most of us. Having to figure out what you may WANT to do after you have been doing something not in your preferred field for so long can be difficult and stressful. This book is perfect for applying some solid, critical thought process to figure out what job will really be best for you. I do mean best for you; mind, body, spirit, etc. This book doesn't just get you to chase the almighty dollar. I sacrificed a higher paying, higher stress job for the job I chose to apply for based off of one pass through this book. I've never looked back. I couldn't be happier; I'm doing something I ENJOY doing and am getting paid what I want to get paid.
MILITARY - buy and read this book. It gives you the tools you need in order to apply logic and processed thought into a much tighter job search.
MILITARY LEADERS - gift this book to your soldiers, sailors, marines, etc., that are getting out. Give it to them early enough for them to work through the book and then follow-up and help them develop a plan. I can't think of a better investment for a future civilian.
