About the Author
Gershon Ben Keren is an author and fifth degree black belt who has been a student of Krav Maga since 1994. He has been trained by some of the Israeli Defense Forces' most experienced and respected Krav Maga instructors. He was inducted into the Museum of Israeli Martial Arts in 2011. In addition to his work in the security sector, he has taught Krav Maga to civilians, security personnel, law enforcement agencies, and elite military units and special forces. Ben Keren's educational focus on the psychology of violence informs his reality-based self-defense training. His fighting techniques combine firsthand observations of violence with the latest academic research. He lives and teaches Krav Maga in Boston, where he runs Krav Maga Yashir Boston.

It's a great book! This is not just a book about ...

It's a great book! This is not just a book about Krav Maga techniques, it dives deep on circumstances where certain threats might happen including the environment and criminals psychological behavior. The real life situations are really dynamic and you can't just expect a single solution, you have to adapt and change based on the environment and how the assailant responses. This book shows you multiple approaches towards the same assault with slight variations with analysis on pros and cons for each solution and in what situations one might be more desirable than the others. One of my favorite part about this book is the section on how human brain works during these conflict situations, which makes perfect sense. Overall, great book, highly recommended it.

Great Investment

The absolute best thing about this book is that it meets the reader at whatever level of experience they have. If you have been training for years, this book offers refinement and understanding to fill in the gaps in your knowledge . I had been someone who felt he could handle any challenge in life, except a physical altercation. The lessons in this book will familiarize the reader with the skills and techniques one should be be aware of in order to begin to have the ability to defend oneself. I think it's also invaluable for people to realize that there are a finite universe of ways they can be attacked and if a person becomes aware of them and learns a defense for each, they are well on their way to providing themselves with a high level of personal safety. All of these thoughts are lessons learned from this book. Great read and you learn something new with each turn of a page. Don't hesitate in making this investment - it is well worth it!

Decent, could've been better

The book is decent and well written, however there are a few glaring issues that are dangerous.

On page 65, handgun pointed to front of head, the technique shown is, push the gun away, strike at the groin with the hand and stomp the knee....all while the attacker still has the handgun. He can easily turn a shoot the victim as he runs away.

Why do this when the traditional defense is available and is shown in the book(98-99?)

On page 92, same situation and he decides to slap the gun away and go for a standing triangle choke,,,,the attacker can easily redirect the weapon and shoot because the arm isn't controlled. Even if it were, the gunman can easily switch hands and open fire, possibly injuring others.

On page 122, handgun to back of head; the womans hand position is all wrong and counter to just about every KM I have ever seen,,,the hands come from underneath and wrap up, not over the top, Also, the disarm she's attempting leaves her open to counter attacks by the attackers left hand, he can choke her with it as well.

Also, any disarm needs to be attempted after a strike or 2 to affect their thought process. There are several instances where this occurs.

Gun threat when seated on page 126...again, the traditional defense is there, why employ a circular motion when it's not needed?

139 again, no strike while attempting a knife disarm, the attacker can counter the defense, attack,etc....

Page 150...see above.

One of Imi's main principles was to block and counter simultaneously, or as soon as possible.

There's quite a bit of that lacking here.

A Road Map to a Poetic Life

Written with a simple, elegant, and com(passionate) prose, Rainer Maria Rilke pens a series of letters to a young aspiring poet, Franz Xaver Kappus that contain a stunningly beautiful argument and plea for living an authentic life, that addresses the silent questions that exist in the deepest chambers of our hearts, the grand themes of literature, and hence life: the meaning of solitude and how to love.
The first letter gives the greatest advice anyone can give to someone aspiring to be anything. You have to ask yourself the following question: "must I?" If you answer in the affirmative, then "build your life in accordance with this necessity; your whole life, even into it's humblest and most indifferent hour, must become a sign and witness to this impulse." That you must only judge Art by the following value, has it arisen out of necessity?
The second letter, he warns against the role of irony running through your life and one must guard against it by searching "into the depths of Things: there irony never descends."
The third letter argues that one must always trust in yourself and your own feelings. Do not fall victim to convention. Which is nothing more than unwillingness on each of our parts to not fully engage life, but rather to take what others have said and done as well-traveled roads to walk through life upon. For the person living a poetic life, "everything is gestation and then birthing. To let each impression and each embryo of a feeling come to completion, entirely in itself, in the dark, in the unsayable...and with deep humility and patience to wait for the hour when a new clarity is born: this alone is what it means to live as an artist: in understanding as in creating."
The fourth letter argues for one to trust in Nature. We all must learn how to "win the confidence of what seem poor." A fundamental change in our mindset must occur in our hearts, a shift from convention to authenticity. We have "to love the questions themselves, as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language." The incredible thirst for quick and easy answers to life's most difficult questions must end. We have to take in the questions, which are really emotions or feelings without names into our bloodstreams. To "live the questions." He goes on to expand upon our relations to sex. "Sex is difficult." We all have to create out of each of our own unique lives an individual relation to sex and hence to our lovers, without carrying the luggage that society and convention loads us down with, then you will approach being a human being. Sex has to become more than a stimulant or balm to cover a more fundamental ache in our spirits. We should be stewards of our own "fruitfulness" to "gather sweetness , depth, and strength for the song of some future poet." (DO YOU DO THAT INBETWEEN THE SHEETS! )
The sixth letter concerns the notion of "solitude." We all create a "vast inner solitude." To walk inside yourself for hours without meeting anyone, that is what you must be able to attain. Through this you gain a child-like perspective, a great "wise not-understanding in exchange for defensiveness and scorn (of adults)." It is within the vast ocean of your solitude that we can truly approach and understand the dimensions of divinity that exists. How do you confront God? By being "patient and without bitterness, and realize that the least we can do is make coming into existence no more difficult for Him than the earth does for spring when it wants to come."
The entire series of letters find its zenith in the seventh letter in which Rilke takes the notion of Solitude and marries it with Love. He argues that yes "love is difficult." But that we must put our trust "in what is difficult as Nature does, to exercise our beings to their fullness." The act of Loving another human being is the "most difficult task...for which all other work is mere preparation." Each of us must "learn" how to love. To know that it springs from our oceans of solitude not from a formless merging of ourselves to another. But rather that each of us must "ripen" into individuals that can experience and give love, "to hearken and hammer day and night." To Love is to accept a "burden and apprenticeship" that allows each authentic person to grow and become rather than fall back and lose what makes them unique and rare. The ultimate aim of life is "the love that consists in this: that two solitudes protect and border and greet each other."
The seventh letter deals with the meaning and confronting of sadness. Rather than running away or fearing sadness, Rilke argues that it is something that must be embraced as an opportunity. These are the moments when something new is entering us "our feelings grow mute in shy embarrasment, everything in us withdraws, a silence arises, and the new experience, which no one knows, stands in the midst of it all and says nothing." In the face of this sadnessthe only courage required is to "face the strangest, most unusual, most inexplicable experiences that meet us." Not to run and cower before the immensity of those feelings and experiences, but to recognize them for what they are, an opportunity to blossom.
The ninth letter argues that we must trust our feelings. But only those feelings that uplift us entire, not by portion. Feelings that raise only a part of us, distort us.
The final letter argues for this poetic life. For Rilke, "Art too is a way of living, and however one lives, one can, without knowing, prepare for it."

Mitchell's translation of Rilke

I find Stephen Mitchell's translation far superior to that if The New World Library. Compare this passage:

"Perhaps all dragons in our lives are really princesses just waiting to see us just once being beautiful and courageous."(NWL)

"Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are really princesses waiting for us to act, just once, with beauty and courage."(SM)

I only wish Miller's were as beautifully hard bound as NWL's.

For the Artist

This book first came to my attention when a good friend of mine sent me a quote from it, which has since become my life quote ("Be patient toward everything unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves..Do not search for the answers which could not be given to you now because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything...Live the questions now")
Since I heard this quote, I tracked down a copy of the book after searching a half dozen bookstores and libraries, and it was worth every minute of work to find it. This book has been put on the highest level of appreciation in my mind, up there with Richard Bach's 'Illusion' and 'One'; my two other favorite books. Rilke's book was written for the artist; the person who wants to live life to its fullest and explore both the inner and outer world and their connections.
Although, as another reviewer said, this book will not be fully appreciated by all readers, it is a must read for everyone, especially those who appreciate spirituality, art and living.

About the Author
Griffis (1843-1928) travelled to Japan in 1870 to teach and soon became a leading educator in Tokyo. His work took him around the country meeting various prominent people. He wrote and lectured extensively on Japan upon his return home, becoming the West's most respected authority on Japanese culture. He received the Order of the Rising Sun in 1928.

Predictable, Mostly because We've Already Read It

I love the Honor Harrington series, and thus really wanted to love this book. However, it suffers from essentially being the previous book, covered from different points of view. This might be beneficial if it really explored aspects of the Mesan Alignment, the great antagonist of the series, but instead the bulk of the story covers the instigation of a series of rebellions so inconsequential, I cannot now recall the name of any of the worlds involved, much less the characters. The first three fourths of the book did nothing more than provide a setup for the RMN to breeze through and solve the problems with no effort expended. At no point was I left in suspense, wondering if victory would be possible. I suppose, given the demonstrated impotence of the Solarian League Navy, that Weber has backed himself into a bit of a corner, as the outcome in any tactical situation is never in doubt, and the strategic picture is too massive to give any sense of immediate concern. Overall, not recommended. If you read the last book, then Shadow of Victory will not add anything to the story.

Don't bother you already know everything that happens.

If you were looking forward to a new Weber book, this isn't it. All this book does is follow the plot of the previous three or four books in still another rehash of already revealed events. It ends right where the previous books ended and does not provide any sort of a conclusion or advancement of the ongoing plot of the Honor Harrington universe. I feel ripped off after buying the same book three times in a row with only a few changes and so long a time between them. While I understand that Weber has had health problems that does not excuse the fact that he and Baen have now repeatedly pulled this scam on readers where they print one book under three titles with various minor changes to make it seem like three different books without actually printing three different books. If and when Weber does another Harrington book I certainly won't buy it until it shows up in a used paperback

Sadly, it's Garbage

It has become sadly clear that David Weber no longer possesses the skill to write at a professional level. The Safehold series has degenerated into an absurdly complex cast of thousands of nobodies going nowhere, and the Honorverse has been going downhill for some time. Now we have this... this shadow of a book. A pathetic mishmash of storylines which concerns a cast of nobodies on unimportant planets which are at best peripheral to the struggle between Manticore and Earth. Remember how Shadow of Freedom started? Remember wondering "Who are these people!? Where are all the characters and settings I've come to love? But after a couple of chapters, we reverted to them. That doesn't happen here. We go from one group of forgettable people with unpronounceable names to another planet with a group of forgettable people with unpronounceable names, to the evil schemers, then onto a third planet, then back to the evil schemers... There are brief interludes featuring RMN people we know, but usually just a few pages, for they're not the focus of this book. What this book looks to be is all the junk that was edited out of the last few books because it was not very interesting and contributed nothing to the arc of the story line. Weber has just jammed them all together, called it a book, and spit it out in utter contempt for his readers.

The Brewster B-339 Buffalo received much criticism during its brief service with the RAF, some justified, some not. Some of the pilots who eventually flew it in combat were happy with their mounts, others hated it as an operational fighter.

Rightly considered below par for service in the UK, the vast majority of the 170 aircraft acquired by the RAF Purchasing Commission from the United States was diverted for use in the Far East, where it was believed they would be superior to any Japanese aircraft encountered should hostilities break out there.

This assessment was to prove tragically very incorrect. When war did erupt, the Japanese Army Air Force - with its highly maneuverable Ki-27 and Ki-43 fighters - and the Japanese Navy Air Force equipped with the mighty A6M Zero, proved vastly superior in just about all aspects, and many of the Japanese fighter pilots were veterans of the war against China.

By contrast, the majority of the young British, New Zealand, and Australian pilots who flew the Buffalo on operations in Malaya and at Singapore were little more than trainees, and many flew into battle with only the basic training of their trade.

Nonetheless, these fledgling fighter pilots achieved much greater success than could have been anticipated, although many paid with their lives.

This is another in a series of books written by Brian Culls, Christopher Shores, or another of the latest generation of WWII aviation historians from Grub Street who are begetting comprehensive histories of often little explored WWII aerial arenas. The aerial defense of Singapore has been largely neglected by historians. Often, when one of these writers publishes, there is little left to explore on the topic. Cull's research isn't quite up to that standard in this volume. This is due in part to the fact that his subjects lost the battle and, thus, many of their records. (Ever wonder what the battle history of Japan's 68th Sentai at New Guinea was?) Japanese records don't exactly abound either. Nonetheless, he does an excelent job and I recommend this work mightily to anyone interested in the Pacific air war.

Thank God for People Like Cull

This book is a real delight. Take and obscure fighter aircraft flown by Commonwealth Air Units in Malaya and Singapore, combine it with an absolutely hopeless battle and you have the makings of a great read.

The Buffalo fighter has won the appelation of "the worst aricraft ever manufactured." Cull proves that although obsolete before it was even delivered to RAAF, RNAF and Netherlands East Indies units in S.E. Asia, it was clearly not a complete washout. Having read numerous works on the fall of Singapore and Malaya I had assumed that the Buffaloes were simply swept from the sky in the one fell swoop. It is amazing to learn that some units actually gave as well as they got from the Japanese.

There are actually some confirmed kills of Japanese Naval Zeros!!!

The fighter leaked oil along the crank seals, was underpowered, slow, and most times the .50 machine guns would not fire most of the time. But on the other side of the equation, the aircaft, because of it weight, was fast in a dive an robust (your chances of coming out of belly landing were good as Cull renumerates in many accounts).

They were largely unloved by their crews, and they could not stand up to even a Japanese dive bomber in aerial combat.

It becomes clear that the fighter may have been capable if it had been better flight tested, uparmed, up-poowered. But even then it would still be outclassed by the Japanese fighters.

Cull recounts numerous aerial combats with great detailed accounts from most of the suviving Australian, British and NZ pilots.

There is a lot here. One is struck by the fact that British were so bamboozled by the Japanese aerial supremacy that they convinced themselves that they were actually fighting Germans and claimed engagements with numerous Me-109s??! The shock that Asians were really much, much better as pilots, had much better equipment was simpley too much for them to believe.

There are also larger issues that Cull does not explore, but these books offer wonderful jumping off points for further study.

Day-by-day account of a hopeless fight

Written after delving directly into the Squadrons' archives, this book is made up of the reports and recollections of the RAF, RAAF, RNZAF and ML-KNIL pilots who flew the Buffalo against the Japanese in the early stages of the Second World War. Air operations by other units are only mentioned in relation to them. There is not much in the way of analysis or comments (in fact, there is little actually written by the authors), but you get first-hand, day-by-day accounts of the flying operations undertaken by the men within the 243, 453, 488 RNZAF and 21 RAAF, and some from the Dutch pilots from 1-, 2- and 3-V1G-V. Written in the almost casual, careless style so typical of fighting soldiers and airmen, they convey a sensation of approaching disaster which is hard to match. There is a very interesting photo section made up of the very few period pictures existing. Appendices show the complete Buffalo victory claims, the casualties, the fate of every single airframe, some useful maps as well as some individual recollections. Probably the most detailed look on the operations undertaken by Allied Buffalo operators, and an indispensable component of any book collection dedicated to the Pacific war.

Truly enjoyable

I started out reading to one of the grandkids, a four-year old. She was captivated. It wasn't just the pictures, seeing a SuperHero that looks like her, but the story really engaged her also. She followed the comic much better than the story in a regular book with a picture per page. It was the amount of detail that went into each frame that enabled her to follow the story so easily.
