How to Cope with our Feelings

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. First of all, I'd like to point out that this is a summary and analysis of Michael and Sarah Bennett's book and is not the original. If you're looking for a quick read of the book "F*ck Feelings" then this book is for you! This summary is divided into 10 key takeaways. The overall book discusses how to deal with different circumstances that enter our lives. I particular enjoyed takeaway 8 on parenting. It states: "Successful parenting can accommodate a certain degree of anxiety. Parents can try to reduce risks as much as possible without blaming themselves for the unavoidable, be cool-headed in a disagreement with a child, and be positive even when learning and parenting are difficult." As a new mom I am constantly worrying and stressing about my parenting. Even though this is only a summary, I felt that it gave me great advice on how I can work on controlling my feelings as a nervous parent.

Surprised me!

Another great review by Eureka! This companion captures the essence of the self help book "F*ck Feelings" and boils down the message into 10 key takeaways. Michael Bennett is a certified psychiatrist who has 30 years working experience in the field and teamed up with his daughter, the comedian and writer Sarah Bennett, to write "F*ck Feelings." This review by Eureka Books outlines their argument about objectivity in everything. Often as humans we let our feelings interfere with how we react with others. When we become more objective with issues like self-esteem, justice, and the impulse to help others, we are much more successful and adept at managing our problems.

A great point in this review is the 4th key takeaway, about being realistic in your desires to help. It is natural to want to help those with mental health issues, and we feel guilt when we cannot assist, but we should respect others and their struggles. We are not capable of fixing everything. When we load ourselves down with too many responsibilities and flatter ourselves with high expectations of recovery, we incapacitate the healing process for our friends and burden ourselves with unnecessary baggage.

I highly recommend this review. It broke down what I thought was a heartless self-help book into a logical and reasonable approach to human nature.

The market is over flooded with self help books that promise you a new outlook on life if you follow their steps. It's nice to find and read one that does not beat around the bush and gives it to you straight and it is funny as well. This companion to the full book gives a great summary outlining the main points. It's like starting a good movie and not finishing it. You want to know how it ends. It has definitely convinced me into purchasing the full book.

I heard about this book from a bibliography in an Alan Watts book. Young was a biologist, so he touches on the same deep philosophical issues from an entirely different perspective.

Best available introduction to perturbation methods

I have read several books on perturbation methods, and this book absolutely the best. Perturbation methods are used in problems where the equations (algebraic, ODEs, or PDEs) involve a small parameter, or that evolve on multiple time scales that differ by orders of magnitude. The basic idea is to build an approximate solution to the equation based on a series expansion involving the small parameter. Usually two or more series expansions are built and then combined to yield a solution to the equation that incorporates dynamics on both the slow and fast time scales (for example).
The first two chapters introduce the basic concepts of asymptotic expansions. Several informative, though relatively simple, examples are developed in detail to illustrate the techniques. The third chapter introduces techniques for solving problems involving multiple scales. Chapters four and five discuss the WKB method and homogenization techniques. The final chapter shows how perturbation methods can be used in conjunction with techniques from dynamical systems analysis, especially stability analysis and bifurcation theory.
The contents of the book are extremely well-chosen and pertinent. Many of the problems and techniques are based on realistic physical systems, and represent the types of problems an applied mathematician is likely to encounter in practice. The book's prose is clear and informative. Only occasionally did I feel that the author had explained something poorly or left out an important piece of information.
There are of course a couple of problems with the book. First, most of the exercises are significantly more difficult than the examples, and no hints or solutions are given. This can be a draw-back if you are using the book for self-study. There are a number of typos and errors in the text, though the author's website has a list of errata. Finally, solving perturbation problems in practice often involves subtle tricks, and unfortunately, this book does not discuss or give examples of many of those tricks.
Overall, this is definitely the best introductory book on perturbation methods. You should definitely consider this book if you work in applied math or with differential equations.

The book is composed of 6 chapters with the topics of Introduction to Asymptotic Approximations, Matched Asymptotic Expansions, Multiple Scales, The WKB and Related Methods, The Method of Homogenization, and Introduction to Bifurcation and Stability and appendices on Taylor Series, Solution and Properties of Transition Layer Equations, Asymptotic Approximations of Integrals, Second-Order Difference Equations, and Delay Equations.

This reviewer, with background in singular perturbations and time scales in automatic control theory and applications, enjoyed reading this book that has a refreshing flavor to perturbation methods. Some of the interesting and useful features of this book are the coverage of both ordinary and partial differential equations related to applications to nonlinear wave and diffusion problems and others, generous sprinkling of a number of examples and both section-wise and chapter-wise exercises throughout the book paving the best way of "learning mathematics", solutions to some of the exercises available from the author's home page and the MATLAB� files, that were used to generate the figures, also available from author's web page.

The book can be used for both undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics and physics and also in aerospace, electrical and mechanical engineering areas. Those working in industry will find this book useful in addressing some of the nonlinear problems in real-world situations.

I found this book explains the ideas very well and also provides examples that help to understand the methods. I also liked all the exercies at the end of each chapter. This is one book that anyone who studies applied mathematics should have on their bookshelf.

Got this book which is better

I ordered a different version but received this more up-to-date version. The cover is a perky orange-yellow which entices me to pick it up. The editor provides advice on how to approach study, then breaks down the study of areas with good and bad case brief examples. I start law school in September and this book me prepare. One good bit of advice was not to study more material than your prof gives you. Stick to the study outline and go for additional help if you are struggling through a particular rule. Don't drown yourself in too many study aids that may not address how the prof wants you to learn the material. Exam time is too late to discover you wasted both your time and money. If you are pre-law, give this a read.

This book is for 1Ls who are starting out in law school. It is highly advisable to read this book prior to starting class. It gives you a taste of what to expect, although no two professors teach law the same way according to Professor Finz. For the price this book is being offered, it is a good investment in how to decide if law school is really for you. There are rules, cases, explanations and all sorts of information to make you think. Highly recommended.

Brilliant read and well organized ideal for any student that is coming from outside the US. I am from the UK and I found that the methodology in answering essay questions in the US is different from the UK, this book was vital for me to achieve the highest grades.

Wilberg's book is by far the best one written on the implications of Heidegger's work for the field of psychotherapy. Suddenly the Zollikon seminars make sense in a totally new light. He takes Heidegger's comments on objectification and reveals how our scientized manner of viewing the human person prevents us from listening to our own being or the being of the patient. Even if you are not interested in Heidegger, any therapist should purchase the book to read what he has to say about listening. I found it radically shifted my understanding of what it meant to listen to myself or someone else. A remarkable book.

I wish this were a good book. The topic is extremely important. Peter Wilberg's scholarship is poor at best. The book was returned as soon as it arrived. Be certain to use the "Look Inside" feature to determine whether this text is for you.

Clear, Concise, Christ Exalting, Worship Inspiring

What the Old Testament Authors Really Cared About is an Old Testament Survey like no other. It is clear in its presentation, providing concise summaries and guidance regarding the nature and message of each book of the OT, as well as the message of the OT as a whole. Derouchie also labors to do more than simply tip his hat to the traditional Hebrew ordering of scripture. He believes and labors to show that reading the Bible the way Jesus would have read it actually has an impact on how we read the text. Jason Derouchie is a Scholar who is passionate about making much of Jesus Christ, and every chapter moves in this direction. Perhaps one of the best things about this Survey is its versatility. The material in its pages is accessible to Beginning Seminary students, College students and High School students alike. Its illustrations, figures, charts, and pictures are both tasteful and helpful. I plan to use this book in both in my future pastoral ministry and in homeschooling my children. Five Stars!

A Worshipful yet Academic OT Survey!

The title of my review does not make much sense...

When you have a quality academic resource, it can tend to be divorced from the heart. On the other hand, many books that are very focused on worship and love for God are devoid of much academic substance and meat. I have read a good bit of surveys and never have I read anything like this. Dr. DeRouchie opens up the text in ways I have never seen but he also invites me to worship Christ. He takes this book from a different angle. Many OT commentators will say that you must read the OT with the mind of a Jew. You must read it without knowing what you know in the NT lest you miss what the original author intended and miss a purer reading of the Text. DeRouchie flips this on it's head and invites you walk with Jesus on the road of Emmaus and allows Jesus to open up the OT to you (Luke 24). For all things in the OT ultimately point to Christ. This book teaches you not to read Christ into every verse, for that would be Hermeneutically irresponsible. But he teaches you to read the OT with which finds it's ultimately fulfillment and end in Christ (Christo-telic). Jason works hard to focus on only essential technical details and hone in on the biblical theology. He has also assembled an amazing cast of heavy weight OT scholars that make this book a go-to book for the OT!

I can give no higher praise

For someone who has struggled engaging the Old Testament, this book was a precious gift to say the least. God used this tool to open up the OT narrative, ushering me into a new world of worship as the wardrobe did the Pevensie children. The book itself is a work of art, with pictures and colorful displays that have a synergistic effect as they are coupled with the superb content. Bottom line: I love Jesus and people more because of this text- I can give no higher praise.
