A handbook that is intended to cover clinical research and practice in the area of eating disorders and obesity should be representative of the field, provide critical guidance, and be accessible to the nonspecialist. According to these criteria, this handbook succeeds. It accurately portrays progress and problems. In the chapters that involve science -- such as genetics, the epidemiology of risk factors, diagnosis, and therapeutic outcomes -- the writing is clear and critical. In the chapters in which science is thin or nonexistent, the authors acknowledge that fact while advocating various therapies (e.g., interpersonal, cognitive and dialectical-behavioral, family, feminist, and pharmacologic), an increased awareness of cultural differences, the need to combat the "toxic environment" of fast foods, the importance of childhood sexual abuse, the psychological and economic issues related to cosmetic surgery, and the role of the media in shaping the perception of desirable bodies. Four of the 35 chapters concern disturbances in body image and body dysmorphic disorder. The discussions in these chapters are based on the plausible idea that dissatisfaction with one's body is a predictor of eating disturbances and that "internalization of the thin ideal [mediates] between sociocultural pressures and body dissatisfaction." Given that most, if not all, adolescents have some complaint about their bodies, research must identify the specific links among body dissatisfaction, eating disorders, and obesity. Research should also clarify why so many of those who are dissatisfied with their bodies and live among media-generated fantasies of thinness, "fat talk," and fast foods do not have anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or severe obesity. The factors that protect young people from these disorders may be the most useful source of new information for the development and implementation of effective preventive measures. Three chapters discuss eating disorders and obesity in childhood and adolescence. The large increase in childhood obesity in the past decade is ominous, and so is the lack of a robust research effort in this area. It is a truism of public health that the earlier detection and intervention occur, the bigger the payoff for the afflicted person in terms of personal satisfaction, social function, and physical health. The savings in costs of health care and increased economic productivity are much larger than any that can be gained by intervention in the case of adults. A final point: this handbook reflects the field's baffling failure to use test meals to understand the disorders of eating. One of 750 pages of text mentions test meals, cites a statement from 1990 that test meals are "the quintessence of behavioral assessment of eating disorders," and then notes that "test meals do not appear to be used widely as an assessment tool." This is like being interested in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders without measuring sleep. A reader could not learn from this handbook that test meals had been measured under laboratory conditions in research involving people with eating disorders or obesity. Given that test meals are an unambiguous, quantitative, and defining phenotype and are a proven bridge for translation between the clinic and animal models, the resistance to their use requires analysis. Well Worth the Money

Never mind that this book (as of the writing of this review, 2008) is 4 years old. This is an impressive and clearly organized handbook on the topic.

The "Treatment" section of the book is particularly well executed: included are CBT, IPT, Feminist Therapy, Family-Based treatments, Pharmacological Therapy, and, of contemporary interest, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for eating disorders. The chapter on Internet-Based Treatment strategies for eating disorder population - for 2004 (the year of publication) - was clearly cutting edge; and for 2008 - still very much topical.

After reading and reviewing a few other handbooks on eating disorders, I have found it to be particularly noteworthy that each treatment is a whole chapter, not just a self-evident (for the professional reader) truism, with a total of 170 pages - approximately a fourth of the entire book!

The "Special Topics" section of the book goes beyond the "miscellaneous" cliche sample of sub-populations and sociological topics. Whereas you'd typically find an overemphasis on, say, eating disorders among athletes and a chapter on cultural aspects of eating disorders, this particular handbook sheds light on a more diverse spectrum of topics - for example, cosmetic surgery and eating disorders, child abuse and eating disorders; and offers a greater depth in covering the usual special section suspects - for example, it offers a chapter that juxtaposes eating disorders among children and adolescents, and a similarly in-depth coverage of the differences in presentation of eating disorders between boys and men.

The list of the contributors is impressive as well: a good deal of academic, clinical and clinical research heavy-hitters.

Worth the money and time. The book on eating disorders successfully meets the ambition of its PDR-like mandate as a reference book on the literature.

Great collection.

This is a great collection of poems from a talented young writer. I stumbled across one of her poems online and immediately sought out her chapbook here. Warsan Shire's writing is elegant, powerful, and makes me uncomfortable in the best ways. On rare occasions, I find art that fills me up. Sometimes, it is with rage, at others it is with guilt, or joy, or inspiration. This is one of those books that makes me feel. All of those things. And more. Read this book. Read these poems.

He escaped Saigon to the US 7th Fleet in one of the USMC Chinook helicopters on April 29, 1975. He is now a guidance counselor in a NYC public school and is the webmaster of generalhieu.com.

Virtue and Corruption in the Viet Nam War

This text presents and illuminating perspective into the highest Vietnamese traditions, and is a fitting posthumous tribute to a ranking member of South Viet Nam's highest military cadres. Written as a sibbling biography, it is richly peppered throughout with mild bias, something freely acknowledged by the author, which nevertheless does not detract from the wealth of objective information, and data that are only enriched by a personal, if family-oriented point of view. This book extolls the virtue of Vietnamese tradition with the highest esteem, as exemplified in this in-depth analysis of one man's contributions to his motherland, set against the backdrop of one of southeast Asia's most tragic and sad chapters in history. Factual information is well presented with adequate supporting documentation and numerous pictures give this historical personage a very vivid and intimate familiarity. The details of some of the information presented can be simultaneously revealing and startling. This book is well-balanced in the extremes: One man's virtues and rapid progression through the military ranks being consistently contrasted with the insidious prevalence or corruption or corrupt practices by the government which he is sworn to protect and defend. The admiration of the author for the Major General lies in stark contrast to the shameful behaviors of so many government officials at all levels, including the presidency, which must bear the brunt of the responsibililty for the eventual downfall of the government of the Republic of Viet Nam. "I am only the instrument of my brother. General Hieu's biography is a self-expression ... General Hieu drew a clear-cut line between the two military and private life areas. This explains why he was able to maintain his integrity and virtue while working with other corrupt and low-moral generals ... The majestic aura that soldiers perceived in General Hieu's personality came from his inner strength, not from an artificial majesty requiring the use of a general's baton, or a combat camouflaged outfit, or a cigar, or an imposing guard detail, etc... And thus they genuinely respected and loved him dearly ..." General Hieu was assassinated in his office headquarters on 8 April 1975. It reveals General Hieu as an unsung hero, whose tactical and strategic skills put him among the best soldiers of modern times, at par with General Rommel of Germany, Patton of the United States, Montgomery of England and Leclerc of France.

An Uncommon ARVNB General

This biography, a reader would notice at the outset, is not written by a historian, an investigative reporter, or a professional biographer. It originates instead from the pen of a younger sibling seeking to resolve the mystery surrounding his brother's untimely death. This legitimate curiosity has evolved into a collection of articles depicting General Nguyen van Hieu as a family man, a patriot, a military strategist, and a man of integrity. This collection of articles authored by siblings, friends, and fellow military men unexpectedly converges to project a dynamic image of an intelligent soldier and brilliant strategist engaged in the twofold quixotic task of overcoming a corrupted military hierarchy and fighting the invading North Vietnamese communist army. The book presents the reader with glimpses of a man living the yin aspect of the Vietnamese society (egalitarian, flexible, spiritual, congenial) and, at the same time, confronting the yang aspect of the neo-Confucianist military and government hierarchy (male dominant, rigid, self-serving, elitist, concerned with face and status). Without any claim to being systematic or thorough in his research, the author has nevertheless gathered a number of revealing personal anecdotes, testimonies from living witnesses, declassified documents from the National Archives, letters from former military academy classmates, phone interviews, excerpts from books, and so forth. From this cacophony of voices emerges the image of a virtuous man, caring father, loving spouse, and competent general respected by Vietnamese and American military personnel of all ranks. The reader would no doubt be surprised to discover this unsung hero in the stark background of negative memories of the Vietnam War and betrayal of the Vietnamese people by the neo-Confucianist military and government hierarchy. Though modest in its presentation, the book manages to do justice to a dedicated soldier and competent general, who is mostly unknown to both the Vietnamese and the American public. After reading this fascinating biography, the reader comes away wondering what might have been had this uncommon general, who epitomized the true Vietnamese people, been allowed to fully exercise his military competence.END

About the Author

Arnold Robbins, an Atlanta native, is a professional programmer and technical author. He has worked with Unix systems since 1980, when he was introduced to a PDP-11 running a version of Sixth Edition Unix. He has been a heavy AWK user since 1987, when he became involved with gawk, the GNU project's version of AWK. As a member of the POSIX 1003.2 balloting group, he helped shape the POSIX standard for AWK. He is currently the maintainer of gawk and its documentation. He is also coauthor of the sixth edition of O'Reilly's Learning the vi Editor. Since late 1997, he and his family have been living happily in Israel.

Nelson Beebe is a long time Unix user and system administrator, and has helped for years on Usenet newsgroups.

He follows Bacon's rise at court and describes his removal from his office as England's highest judge for taking bribes. Zagorin then examines Bacon's philosophy and theory of science in connection with his project for the promotion of scientific progress, which he called "The Great Instauration." He shows how Bacon's critical empiricism and attempt to develop a new method of discovery made a seminal contribution to the growth of science. He demonstrates Bacon's historic importance as a prophetic thinker, who, at the edge of the modern era, predicted that science would be used to prolong life, cure diseases, invent new materials, and create new weapons of destruction. Finally, the book examines Bacon's writings on such subjects as morals, politics, language, rhetoric, law, and history. Zagorin shows that Bacon was one of the great legal theorists of his day, an influential philosopher of language, and a penetrating historian.

Francis Bacon, one of the preeminent architects and prophets of the scientific revolution, is frequently acknowledged by philosophers and historians, says Zagorin, but he is almost as frequently misunderstood. This is not so much a biography as an attempt to portray the full range of his intellectual ambitions, which were nothing less than an often futuristic reworking of how humans should think about their natural and social environments. Drawing both on well-known published works such as Novum Organum and The Advancement of Learning as well as on lesser-known fragments, Zagorin (Rebels and Rulers, 1500-1660) attempts to reconstruct the thought and character of this true Renaissance man. Although he starts out with an extensive examination of Bacon's natural philosophy, he does not neglect Bacon's less celebrated investigations into jurisprudence or moral philosophy. In the public sphere, Bacon was, as Zagorin rather daintily puts it, "preeminently practical." In fact, Bacon, a fawning admirer of Machiavelli, took great pains to distance himself from his patron, the Earl of Essex, once the latter fell out of favor. It's not Bacon's finest moment and is sometimes skirted by biographers, but Zagorin generally treats Bacon's shortcomings with historical honesty. Even translated from the (usual) Latin, Bacon's works can still be difficult for modern readers. Unfortunately Zagorin's interpretation doesn't always help matters?witness his translation of Instauratio Magna as The Great Instauration. Also while the book begins enthusiastically, some repetition and lack of focus slow the pace of the last few chapters.

An erudite investigation into the work of the man regarded as the founder of the Scientific Revolution, this volume attempts to tie together Bacon's many writings, not only on science, but also on language, morals, politics, rhetoric, law, and history. From the outset, Zagorin, a professor of history emeritus at the University of Rochester, clearly states that it is not his intention to write a biography of Bacon, who has been the subject of numerous and recent biographies. However, he does provide a tantalizing glimpse of Bacon's personal life, as well as his flawed character. Much to his credit, Zagorin demythologizes Bacon by detailing his political ambitions and ruthless opportunism. Yet the glimpse is all too brief, and while this biographical introduction informs the rest of the book, Zagorin's later readings of Bacon would have benefited from a more integrated approach toward his life and his work. The bulk of the book is a thorough interpretation of that work and its impact. Zagorin illustrates in a sound and convincing manner how Bacon's philosophy and theory of science had a far-reaching effect on the growth of science. While Bacon made no scientific discoveries of his own, he did believe that science provided humankind with the instrument to master nature. Finally, at the end of the book, the author delves into Bacon's less known works in the humanities, proving that in these fields, too, Bacon was an original and often brilliant thinker. As a legal scholar, for instance, Bacon sought to devise a universal system that went beyond English common law. Though lucidly written, this book still requires a knowledge of Bacon's work as formidable as Zagorin's. A valuable work for the serious Bacon scholar, but not for the layperson. misses the boat

Zagorin has not added much to the great mystery of Francis Bacon. He has written a superficial understanding of the life and as a result left out many salient aspects that would have provided greater insight into Bacon's motivations and philosophy. Save your money on this one and buy a copy of Alfred Dodd's:"Francis Bacon's Personal Life Story"instead.

About the Author
Mark Breslin has four generations of contracting in his family. His great grandfather, grandfather and dad were all contractors. Mark has served as the Executive Director of the Engineering and Utility Contractors Association, (EUCA) for the last 22 years. EUCA is a multi-employer bargaining group that represents hundreds of firms, performing billions of dollars in contracts annually in California. Prior to this, Mark worked in the trades himself, financing both his high school and college educations. Mark became an Executive Director at age 26, becoming one of the youngest in the US to hold this position at the time. He has acted as chief negotiator, arbitration specialist and contractor advocate for the past 20+ years, negotiating over 100 master agreements. The association he works for represents only union contractors and has had this operational philosophy since inception. Known for his blunt and uncompromising style, Mark has made presentations on labor-management relations to over 100,000 labor, management and rank and file union members across the US and Canada. These presentations range from small group training programs to keynote speeches for over 2500 people. He has trained several union and management representatives on business development and market share recovery strategies in both the US and Canada resulting in hundreds, if not thousands, of new contracts being signed and relationships being built. He works with nearly every major International Union and dozens of employer associations throughout North America. Mark graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in Industrial Design and has since taught at Sonoma State and Golden Gate Universities. His interests include mountaineering, adventure travel and being a good dad. He is married and lives in Dublin, California with his wife Susan and children Ally, Micheala and Jordan. His three books Organize or Die , Survival of the Fittest, and Million Dollar Blue Collar are in wide circulation in both the US and Canada. Over 70,000 books have now sold. Common sense for dummies.

Once again I felt the it was another good common sense book from Mark Breslin. I like his straight-forward approach to spelling it out. I got a few like nuggets of good information and a little reaffirming that I'm doing a decent job of most things. Sometimes just peddling as fast as you can isn't enough. It's worth the read.

I expected to learn more about leadership skills that were specific to construction management from this book, but ended up just getting your less-than-average leadership qualities book.
I would recommend the 21 irrefutable laws of leadership instead.

If you read the book, you will appreciate it.

After reading Gebhard's book, I decided to see what others thought about the book. I was quite surprised to see one reviewer give the book only one star. But, then I read the review and realized that this person had not actually read the book. He simply decided that he did not like the book because he thought the author had friends write the reviews. His review without reading the book is like not liking a person because someone told you a few things about her.
I like Gebhard's book because he does not claim to know the best way to teach. Rather, he wants us, as ESL teachers or future teachers, to learn how to make our own decisions about what to do in the classroom. He gives lots of examples of things we can do as teachers. (I especially like his section chapters on teaching skills -- conversation, listening, reading, writing -- and his chapter on culture and teaching.)He also provides real problems that real teachers have, and gives multiple examples of activities and materials that experienced teachers use. But, he does not tell teachers how they should teach.
The book is full of ideas and easy to read. As an ESL teacher, I can highly recommend it.

Up-to-date and to the point; a bridge of theory and practice

This is a book on language teaching for language teachers. The book takes the view that language teachers must be responsible for making the ideas in the book real for their own particular contexts. The book starts with self-development as a theme and then moves on to teaching skills. Jerry Gebhard is careful to point out that he is not providing a bag of tricks as each application is backed-up with a sound theoretical perspective. The references in each section are excellent if the busy teacher has some time to read in more depth. Also, each chapter has activities that teachers can explore in order to apply the chapter information to their own particular context. What I especially like is that these activities encourage teachers to talk to other teachers and colleagues. This is where real self-development starts. This book, then, is a welcome user friendly addition to the field of English Language Teaching. If the user is a teacher, you have found the right book!

This is an absoulute work of superb scholarship. Dr. Gebhard is obviously speaking from years of both research and real-life experience. In an area filled with dull and lifeless preachings by secluded scholars tucked away in ivory towers, this work stands out as a testament to thorough reaseach complimented by understandable and readable conclusions. A must read for anyone in this field!
