About the Author
Walter Aerts is Professor of Accountancy and Head of Department of Accounting and Finance at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. He is a member of the IFRS committee of the Belgian Accounting Standards Board and has taught in several countries in Europe and East Asia. Peter Walton is professor of accounting at the University of Geneva and visiting professor at the University of Paris Dauphine. He is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and worked for multinational companies before becoming an academic.

I have discussed those publications in several of the brief chapters in this book, many of which were posts that first appeared on my "Living Single" blog at Psychology Today or my "Single at Heart" blog at Psych Central. The most important chapter, I think, is Chapter 2, "No study has ever shown that getting married makes people happier or healthier – and no study ever will." In it, I make the case more thoroughly and forcefully than ever before. In fact, I think that chapter is so significant that I have published it as a stand-alone book, The Science of Marriage: What We Know That Just Isn't So. The first chapter in this book, "Living single: Lightening up those dark, dopey myths," is a broad-ranging discussion of the psychology of single life. In it, I challenge the pervasive claims about the benefits of marriage, but that is just a part of the discussion. The chapter originally appeared in Cupach and Spitzer's edited volume, The Dark Side of Personal Relationships II. As with most academic volumes, it is very expensive. Part I of Marriage vs. Single Life: How Science and the Media Got It So Wrong includes just those two substantial chapters. The second chapter was originally written for fellow academics and some sections are fairly detailed. This excellent book by Bella DePaulo, Ph.D. shatters so many myths regarding marriage and it's glorification in our society. Myths like "Married people live longer" and "Married people are happier with life than singles" are completely exposed by Dr. DePaulo's world class research. The book is easy to read even though much of it is based on academic studies. Single people are definitely discriminated against in our world. This book should be discussed on every major news story that glorifies marriage and stigmatizes single people. Highly recommended.

About the Author
MUHAMMAD YUNUS was born in Bangladesh, educated at Dhaka University, and studied economics at Vanderbilt University on a Fulbright scholarship. He is the founder and director of Grameen Bank. He and Grameen Bank were awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize, and he received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. He is also the author of Banker to the Poor and Creating a World without Poverty.

good primer on Social Businesses

Well worth the read for understanding the Grameen concept of building Social business and the capacity of social business to impact the world in addressing specific issues. Yunus shows the successes and failures and raises important questions for persons considering using business to address social issues. At the end of the day, the social business still must make a profit as it is a business. The book should be read critically as Yunus interjects European welfare governance as a desirable model not yet able to be developed in many countries, thus the need for social business. His world view some how separates government from the people rather than the American model of government of the people, by the people, for the people. However, Yunus rightly shows how business can be run for the benefit of the people, by the people. Yunus could make the book a better read by eliminating some broad assertions on governance and references to issues caused by [the myth of] global warming and instead write that social issues can be solved by social businesses, regardless of the cause or perceived cause. I highly recommend the book for practitioners as well as for people desiring to better understand how to create sustainability which by itself eliminates poverty.

Starting your own Social Business

One of the most useful books I have read and referred to on many occasions. As our cohort from the Workforce Development Advocate program of the California State University of Sacramento completes a long journey with this book Building Social Business: The new kind of capitalism that serves humanity's most pressing needs by Muhammad Yunus. Yunus is also the co-founder of Grameen Danone and Veolia. The cohort had shared this book by presenting the information given in each chapter.

This was one of the best ways to actually cover an entire book.
Yunus dreamed of helping others and to end poverty. He created a micro-credit system to help poor woman establish a business in Bangladesh. This system is also known as Social Business. Some of his stories that he shares in the book are from some amazing people that are all trying to make a living. This second chance has made that happen. This book covers all that is needed in order to start-up a small business.

I recommend this book to anyone wanting to start a business. It is also a great book to have in a business and marketing program at the high school level. I also recommend that any student looking for a community service project, entrepreneurship or social business.

Employing Business to Battle Poverty

Muhammad Yunus is perhaps world's best known anti-poverty crusader. His new book, Building Social Business, is a manifesto for those who care deeply about solving the society's "wicked" problems - poverty, illiteracy, malnutrition, global warming. It is a treasure trove of creative ideas, exciting business models, and plans on how to create sustainable solutions for the betterment of the world's poor, and slowly chip away at global poverty.

Listening to Yunus speak, as I recently did in Houston (he gave the commencement speech at Rice), and reading his new book, one gets the sense of being in the presence of a world class social entrepreneur. He has credibility that only comes from years of toiling in the field to perfect these business models. Peter Ducker would have been proud of Muhammad Yunus and his ideas and experiments in managing new businesses to solve the multi-faceted problems of poverty.

The book is a sequel to his earlier books - Banker to the Poor, published in 1998, and, Creating a World Without Poverty, published in 2007. The new book describes his work in the years since he received the Noble Prize in Peace in 2006. His success gives new meaning to what President Kennedy said, "One person can make a difference and every person should try."

The new book is a call for ordinary citizens, organizations, and nations to dream of a better world for all humans, and act proactively to fight poverty, and overcome other big challenges that threaten human progress and prosperity. Is taming global poverty an overly audacious goal? Can this goal be attained in our lifetime? How can we eliminate poverty and related problems that have bedeviled human society for centuries? The author is supremely optimistic that poverty can be overcome, and the book presents a blueprint for a new type of business organization (Social Business or SB) dedicated to improving the conditions of the poor in a profitable and sustainable way.

Weber has written for the stage as well, adapting the lyrics for the American version of composer Alexander Zhurbin s "Seagull: The Musical." Weber earned a toque blanche at the French Culinary Institute and ran a catering business, Between Books She Cooks, for a decade. She plays chess, badly, and drinks Irish whiskey.

Limitted Information

This is a nice book to augment a collection, but is not complete. The set of guides written by Smith and his daughter (Weber) do not overlap. This means that you need this book and the edition for the south in order to look up mushrooms in the south. There are no mentions of spore print colors in the individual entries, which makes for a lot of thumbing back and forth between the specific entries and the genus descriptions

A GOOD SUPPLEMENT

I was glad I added this one to my collection and library. As others have pointed out, it certainly is not an all inclusive work by any means, but I did find the photography well done and the book to be helpful IF I use it in conjunction with other works. I cannot stress the "IF" enough. I photograph wild flowers as a hobby but cannot pass up a good shot of any mushrooms I come across in my wonderings. This is a good field guide to carry in the car and it usually gives me enough information to get a good start on identification after the photography work is done and I have time to properly research the photographed subject. I suspect the very, very serious collector or professional would need much more than is offered here, but for my purposes, it works just fine.

This book contains excellent color photos to mach the color tones and size characteristics of the mushrooms in the Midwest. We typically search in the areas south of Lake Superior.

A gem of a book

This gem of a book is chock-full of hard won wisdom. It will be very helpful for peers (and also for those who are beginning to work in the mental health field). Peers are as important as anything else in recovering from mental health disorders. But the mental health world can be bewildering; it has its own jargon. This book addresses that problem by defining terms and concepts commonly used by psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists and therapists. It provides many helpful tips for sticky situations that peers might find themselves in. There is a helpful list of contacts at the end, and space for the reader to add telephone numbers so that this pocket book can be personalized. Highly recommended for peers and anyone else interested in helping people in recovery.

About the Author
G. Tyler Miller has written 62 textbooks for introductory courses in Environmental Science, Basic Ecology, Energy and Environmental Chemistry. Since 1975, Dr. Miller's books have been the most widely used textbooks for Environmental Science in the United States and throughout the world. Translated into eight languages, they have been used by almost 3 million students. Dr. Miller has a professional background in Chemistry, Physics and Ecology. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and has received two honorary doctoral degrees for his contributions to environmental education. He taught college for 20 years, developed one of the nation's first environmental studies programs and created an innovative interdisciplinary undergraduate science program before deciding to write Environmental Science textbooks full time in 1975. Currently, he is the president of Earth Education and Research, which is devoted to improving environmental education.

Scott Spoolman is a writer with more than 30 years of experience in educational publishing. He has worked with Tyler Miller since 2003 as a coauthor on editions of LIVING IN THE ENVIRONMENT, ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE and SUSTAINING THE EARTH. With Norman Myers, he also coauthored ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS: A MODULAR APPROACH. Spoolman holds a master's degree in Science Journalism from the University of Minnesota. He has authored numerous books and articles in the fields of Environmental Science, Geology and Natural History, Political Science and Business. He worked as an acquisitions editor on a series of college Forestry textbooks. He has also worked as a consulting editor in the development of over 70 college and high school textbooks in fields of the natural and social sciences. In his free time, he enjoys exploring the forests and waters of his native Wisconsin along with his family: his wife--environmental educator Gail Martinelli--son Will and daughter Katie.
