Really great personal finance resource

This book is one of the better personal finance books I've read. The author begins by sharing that he grew up in poverty, which is very meaningful to me. It's hard to take financial experts who have never had to struggle financially seriously. They don't know what the average person goes through, but this author does. (I also like that he makes himself very accessible to readers--he actually shares his personal email address at the end of the book. I haven't reached out to him yet, but will be sure to if I have any questions later).

The substance of the book is also very helpful. He covers all aspects of personal finance, from budgeting to saving to investing to finding ways of earning more money. He is honest and thoughtful, never condescending. He uses straightforward language and gives practical advice. Some of his tips seem commonsense when you read them, but his explanation really adds some meat to their bones and gives you more motivation to actually follow the advice.

This is a book that will stay in my virtual library for a long time. I really appreciate the advice found inside and I am happy to recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their personal finance knowledge and/or behaviors.

Learned a lot

The aim of “Smart Money” is to help readers prepare themselves for long-term financial management and to stay far from the ‘trial and error’ stage that I personally know myself and many of my peers are far too familiar with. I was very happy to see early on in the book that the author seems to truly understand what this is like and he makes sure not to overwhelm readers, instead starting with the basics and easing into more advanced aspects of personal finance through practical examples.

The book is perfect not only for students but literally any kind of people without much of an in-depth financial background who are simply looking for straightforward, concise and easy-to-understand advice. Most importantly, the information is practical and can be applied right away – I plan on making some significant financial changes over the next few weeks that I am sure will have proven to be long overdue. I highly recommend it.

Frustrated!!!

I did finish this book, but it was difficult. This author's grammar was atrocious, which was distracting. Complete sentences have verbs in them and there are rules for comma usage! I lost count of how many times the author touted that he has an MBA, yet I feel the subject matter could have been simplified further. This ebook is still too complex for a young person or a first time investor. Not impressed !

About the Author
Roz Chast grew up in Brooklyn. Her cartoons began appearing in the New Yorker in 1978. Since then, she has published more than one thousand cartoons in the magazine. She has written and illustrated many books, including What I Hate: From A to Z, and the collections of her own cartoons The Party After You Left and Theories of Everything. She is the editor of The Best American Comics 2016 and the illustrator of Calvin Trillin's No Fair! No Fair! and Daniel Menaker's The African Svelte, all published in Fall 2016.

"The Wheel of Doom" and gallows humor about some grossly brutal truths.

* As I write this, my 83-year-old dad is withering away in an assisted living facility, riddled with Alzheimer's. Sometimes I want my Dad to die now - because he's unaware of his suffering - and he'd cuss me out if he knew he is turning into what Roz Chast's mother describes as "a pulsating piece of protoplasm." I feel guilty feeling this way - but "Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?" makes such forbidden thoughts feel normal.

* (BTW, don't buy the Kindle version. This title, with its colorful cartoons and photos - as well as its handsome construction as a hardcover book - truly belongs on your coffee table. I sampled the Kindle version, didn't like it, and bought the hardcover.)

* This book feels weirdly clairvoyant. It exposed my doubts, fears and paradoxical feelings about watching my parents die slowly before my eyes. I've read almost everything about the subject of aging and dying. And yet this is the first book that captures the exhausting experience of caring for aging parents, e.g., that it's sometimes gross - (see passages about hoarding, incontinence and "grime") - AND funny - (see "The Wheel of Doom" and Roz Chast's father's obsession with myriad bank books, decades old).

* The author's hand-wringing about whether there's going to be enough money to pay for her parents' care is spot on. How long will the money last if they live "X" more years vs. "Y" more years? I do these calculations every month, constantly updating and trying to prepare for the worst. Any savings will be drained by expenses which will have no effect on terminal outcomes. If the daily care and feeding of your parents doesn't kill you - then the avalanche of paperwork and legal stuff that must be done - will.

* Hence despite the preference to "talk about something more pleasant," if nothing else, this book demonstrates why planning for our parents' end-of-life care must begin NOW - not later.

* I recommend this book for every person who's on the brink of going insane about their aging parents. Give it to caregivers, give it to your siblings, give it to anyone who hates dark subjects - but who can handle them if they're presented in a disarmingly funny style that's accessible - yet still honest. (I don't think I can read another "text-only" book about the "death spiral" of aging parents.)

* In sum, "Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?" takes the hard edges off some things while inflicting blunt-force traumas about others. Roz Chast nails the impending death of our parents in a way that feels like a landmark work. I know such praise sounds silly given the sea of excellent books out there about aging. But I've never seen this subject presented in an original, humorous and touching way, complete with hand-drawn illustrations and color photos. It avoids the trap of being overly optimistic, forcing us to confront the gruesomeness of mortality - while STILL providing an emotional "lift" about something universal.

* This book makes going through one of the darkest periods of my life - feel almost worth it.

Our parents lives...and ours?

Cartoonist Roz Chast has written/drawn a book about her parents' final years, "Can't We Talk About Something Pleasant?". In it she describes both her own upbringing - only child, born late-in-life to older and neurotic parents - and how her feelings as a child hindered her dealing with the parents as they aged. She is certainly not alone in her mixed-up emotions towards her parents; most of us have the same feelings. Roz Chast can just express them better.

This is a difficult book to read. It must have been excruciating to live through and then put down on paper. But it is a book that all us "boomers" (hate the word but what else is there? "Lunch meat in the sandwich generation"?) should read. Because I'm not sure too much is going to change when we reach our 80's and 90's. We tend to have fewer children - Roz was an only child, as I noted above - and so fewer people to share the burdens of us as we age. Will we be put in Assisted Living "places" with the alacrity we seem to be putting our own parents into? For the record, both my parents died in nursing homes where they received excellent care.

Roz Chast's parents - George and Elizabeth - lived well into their 90's. And they aged "together". They tried to take care of themselves and each other in their dingy Brooklyn apartment, but it came the time to get them the extra care they could no longer give themselves. Roz describes how going through her parents' vacated apartment was like going through a junk store haven. And she shows photographs - as well as using her drawings - to show how crowded the apartment truly was.

The reader may come away thinking Roz had conflicted feelings about her parents. She sure did and she was certainly entitled to those feelings. I laughed a bit in parts, but I was able to appreciate her words and deeds because I had frequently felt the same way with my own parents, particularly as they aged. As death took the Chasts - two years apart - Roz seemed to have come to terms with these strange people who had given birth and raised her.

Chast's book is a very "personal" book which will resonate with a lot of people.

Well worth a read

This memoir is so honest (brutally so at times I suppose)and so well told with terrific humor, that I must say if you have an aging parent(s)that you are caring for, concerned about, worry about, wonder about or if you recently lost an elderly parent(s)who you took care of, this book let's you know you aren't alone while allowing you a moment or two to laugh (even through tears). Roz Chast expresses feelings that I think many people (certainly I) have felt during this journey - we simply don't voice them and occasionally feel guilty for having the thoughts. It is good to know that the frustration and other feelings you have at times while dealing with a parent (especially one with dementia) is shared. For me, this book was like having drinks with a good friend. I believe, in the end, Roz showed her deep loving connection in her own perfect way via this book. I think it was expressed in a way her mother would have understood even if a few other reviewers didn't.

Surprised me!

Troy, Elliot and Sophie are the three submariners who are in search of a black box from the disappeared plane in Indian Ocean. They pick up some sort of different signal four miles underwater. They pursue their journey next day again to see where that signal is from. What the trio find is completely unexpected and their life is on the line now.

Oliver Phipps has created a neat and superficial world of action and adventure. The writing and editing was good. The characters were engaging. There are major plot twists that will keep the readers on edge. The 'strangers'' world was made rich and well thought out to create enough suspense in the mind of the readers. This short sci-fi underwater adventure has definitely surprised me!

Fantastic, easy read!

In the wake of the missing flight N340, three submariners are sent on a search to locate the aircraft. What they find is incredible and frightening. This novel will transport you into a highly imaginative and action-packed world. I have not read many novels that incorporate mythology into the storyline, but I throughly enjoyed this one. I didn't need extensive knowledge to understand just what the three were up against, which is always nice.

If you have a free afternoon and want to read something both easy and thrilling, this should be the novel you purchase. It was a lot of fun and didn't lose my attention for a second. This author has a way of creating a world that you can visualize. The only reason I even give this a four star instead of five is due to the occasional grammar issues. That said, don't let this keep you away! They will not take away from the experience for a second. In fact, I look forward to reading some more of the books by this author. New fan here!

Intense, action packed underwater thriller!

The author creates an intense, action packed underwater sci-fi thriller that is fun and exciting at every turn. A plane has disappeared in the Indian Ocean and our three main characters Troy, Sophie, and Eliot are in a submersible in route to find what they think is the black box. What they find will change their lives forever. Oliver Phipps imagination and creativity are simply amazing. You feel you are right there in the trench with Troy and his crew to make sense of everything that is unfolding before them. The blending of mythical monsters in the stranger's world was simply genius. I look forward to more from this talented author.

Daniel Petrocelli is the attorney who represented Fred Goldman and his family in their civil suit against O.J. Simpson for the death of their son Ron. (As such, he also coordinated the simultaneous prosecution of suits brought by Ron Goldman's biological mother and by the estate of Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson.) In Triumph of Justice, Petrocelli tells readers how he was able to succeed where Marcia Clark and Chris Darden failed, convincing a jury that Simpson was indeed liable for the deaths of Goldman and Brown Simpson.

Petrocelli takes us behind the scenes, revealing how he got--and almost lost--the job soon after Simpson walked out of the criminal trial. He goes through rigorous depositions and cross-examinations in nearly complete detail, poking holes in Simpson's ludicrous alibi. Although he has very little good to say about Simpson (whose football exploits he admired before taking on the case), Petrocelli does have professional compliments for his legal adversaries. It's an important element to note--unlike other books from Simpson trial insiders, Triumph of Justice doesn't have aggrandizement or apologies for its author as the top priority. The definitive book on the Simpson case. Daniel Petrocelli and his fellow lawyers brilliantly dissected and debunked every myth about the Simpson case. I found the book very entertaining and well written and an excellent primer on how to do direct and cross examination of a witness.

The book also demonstrated the powerful differences between a criminal prosecution and a civil lawsuit. The plaintiff lawyers brilliantly used the civil rules of discovery to their benefit. They made a discovery demand for Simpson to provide all the evidence he had of any sort of police conspiracy, contaimination of evidence, evidence of any third party who did the murder, etc. Simpson could not produce a single piece of evidence to support any of these theories. And since he could not produce any such evidence, the court properly refused to allow him to argue those theories at trial. Trials are solely about what can be proven and disproven. They are not forums to throw out every cockamaimie theory you can come up with (the criminal trial in this case).

The civil rules also required Simpson to submit to "requests for admission" a powerful mechanism to reduce what has to be proven at a trial---if the opponent admits it, you don't have to prove it. Simpson had to admit that the blood collected at Bundy and in his car was his. And he had absolutely no evidence whatsoever to back up any claim that it was planted.

The civil rules also required Simpson to submit to a deposition and to testify at the trial. If he had refused to testify, he would've forfeited the case. And of course in his deposition and in his trial testimony he lied continuously and in easily provable ways. For every lie he gave the plaintiffs had one and usually at least two different witnesses to impeach Simpson, often testimony from his close friends, Taft, Cowlings, Kardashian and his estranged girlfriend Paula Barbieri, amongst others.

Finally, and most devastatingly, they found the photos of Simpson wearing the same shoes that were worn by the killer at the murder scene. Simpson had previously denied ever owning such shoes. And to try and debunk the photo? He brings in a kooky JFK conspiracy buff as his photo "expert". Then when 30 other photos from a different photographer show up, one of them printed in a newspaper 8 mo before the murders, the game was over for Simpson.

An innocent man doesn't have to lie when he's on trial. Simpson lied. I thought the most powerful argument that Petrocelli made in his rebuttal was concerning the attempt by Simpson's lawyers to trash the reputation of Ron Goldman. If Simpson was truly innocent, why would he try to trash and debase the memory of Ron Goldman? According to Simpson's theory, Ron Goldman died fighting to save the life of the mother of Simpson's children! In fact, if there really someone else who did the murder, then Goldman's heroics might've prevented the killer from going into the home and murdering Simpson's children. But instead Simpson's lawyers ended up mocking Ron Goldman. Only a guilty man does that.

I found Petrocelli's book utterly engrossing. I admit now that I was a Simpson trial junkie. Perhaps because of my disgust with the first outcome, it was with excitement that I picked up Petrocelli's book; I was not disappointed. Petrocelli's finest accomplishment with this book is showing how utterly shameless Simpson is. Petrocelli does not hide his incredulity, as well he shouldn't. Using sworn documents and other statements and materials, Petrocelli shows step by step Simpson's repeated attempts to obfuscate, attenuate, and ameliorate. Petrocelli also succeeds in voicing the reader's thoughts, as when he makes comments on specific Simpson lies; he knows what the reader is thinking. If you read one more book on Simpson, make it this one. "After you read this Simpson bible, you must find him liable."

An outstanding perspective of legal management!

Was drawn to this book because I had seen Daniel Petrocelli on various talk shows. His explanation and legal rationale relative to the important legal and social issues of this case caught my attention. Prior to the publication of his book, I had not read any books relative to the O J case. Petrocelli provides the reader with a behind the scene view as to the strength of his leadership and managerial skills. He was faced with a huge task of evaluating the mountains of legal testimony and evidence from the original case. Where to start? Where would the money to put on a first class case come from? Who should be involved? He takes the reader on his personal journey from the early stages as to whether he should take the case,through his approach to key individuals in his law firm, the rationale he used for delegation, as well as expressing the personal doubts he encountered both prior to and during the case. Soon the reader feels his obsession, his passion and distaste for Simpson, but is still able to become focused enough to develop a very cogent legal strategy. The book certainly is a must reading for any law student because of its awareness in how important it is to have good case preparation. Such an approach may be taught in law school, but when done in an effective way as outlined by Petrocelli, it can be a realistic learning experience. It is even recommended reading for experienced trial lawyers who have an opportunity to reinforce what it takes to develop a thoroughness of legal preparation whenever they represent a client. Petrocelli provides a high quality sense of reality for legal scholars and practioners as to what clients should expect from a legal team in a high stakes winner take all game. Can't say enough good things about this book

First off the style in which it was written is really cute. It was lighthearted and extremely fun to read. My favorite thing about it was the little stories it had. Things I never knew, that really inspired me. I liked reading about how famous songs were rejected over and over before getting signed and recorded. If you're feeling rejection or dispair, this book will definitely pick you up. It contains great information on writing lyrics. If only it had some more info on the music part of songwriting. The stories are funny and entertaining and the information is really good. I think this book is absolutely mandatory for any songwriter! I don't give many 5 stars but this book gets 5 easily!

well, this book is good in how it shows you some of the basic mechanics of songwriting. so this book is good if you are looking to be a songwriter. if you are an artist, it will probably be both seductive and repulsive at the same time. so get it, read it, take the parts you like and use it. and as for the rest, well, you know the saying... love thy enemy.

After reading this book ,everything looks so obvious

There is a saying, the obvious is only obvious once it becomes known. This is the case here. While reading the book I said to myself this is so obvious mistakes that one often make - however it was not so obvious until I saw the common wrongs and how to right them. It is very practical and to the point, yet it helps tremendously. This is the kind of book one has to read thoroughly the first time around, and then scan through every so often just to refresh the memory. It can serve as a "checklist" from time to time to make sure you are on the right track with a song. I enjoyed the book and think it makes a contribution to songwriting skills.

Paul Thornton is an informative author, and I also had the privilege of taking his class on Principles of Management. His format is very effective, and provides ample information and secondary sources from which to expand his lessons. The chapters are laid out in a progressive manner, which gives the student and/or reader a solid foundation to build upon as they move forward.

Thornton is very knowledgable on the subjest of management and leadership, and it certainly shows--both in person, and through his written material.

I took a class that required this book. It has so much useful information in it. I have since completed the class but the book never leaves my desk. I refer back to it for my job, new business, and personal life. It has become a very valuable piece of equipment that I am thankful to have.

This book has amazing business concepts and how to handle many different situations. I started reading this book as a relationship person and grew into a manager by the end. I am ready to take on the business world.Thank you Paul Thornton.

He has conducted over 600 seminars and workshops for public and private sector organizations. He has written extensively in the areas of sales, supervision, communications, and management. Dr. Reece was named “Trainer of the Year” by the Valleys of Virginia Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development and was awarded the “Excellence in Teaching Award” by the College of Human Sciences and Education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

I had a professional selling class last semester and we used this text. This book takes great care to explain the importance of partnering and adding-value in sales. People can buy 'stuff' anywhere, but you have to really differentiate yourself to get ahead in today's market. There are also on chapters on qualifying prospects, creating sales presentations, negotiating buyer concerns, ethics, and even time management. Briefly touches on Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs as well. Each chapter has in-depth case problems. Great for anyone thinking about a future in sales or management.

This was a very important, time sensitive item! It was a textbook for a class that was starting soon. The sender waited a whole week before I emailed asking where my book was and they responded 'Oh I will send it today' when it should have been on its way. Then when it finally arrived it was the wrong edition! I was so mad that all this time and money was wasted. I had to drop the class due to the fact I did not receive the textbook that I needed after waiting forever!!

Order Extremely Early or You'll Get the Book Extremely Late

When I first placed my order, the expected delivery time was 3 to 15 business days so I thought that I would receive the book well within that time frame. I ordered on March 4, but didn't receive the book until March 26. By that time, my class was over and I had no use for the book. If I had known that the seller would take so much time to mail the book I would have ordered from somewhere else. I can't comment on the quality of the merchandise because I still haven't opened the package. I asked the seller for a refund and she told me no. I am stuck with a book I no longer need.
