About the Author

Author and artist Tara Dale has been in the self-help industry since 1992, when she began helping clients add healthy organic food and exercise to their lives.

In 1997, Dale opened her first yoga studio, the Inner Garden. In 1999, she opened her first of nine yoga studios, called Yoga Tree in the Bay Area.

Dale teaches guided meditation, and she offers free guided-meditation sessions on YouTube. Her YouTube channel is Dream Out Loud with Tara. She is currently working on developing a meditation app.

About the Author
Mr. Bruns has twice won the Book of the Year award at the BookExpo America. His first book, Cruise Confidential—by the only American in the history of Carnival Cruise Lines to endure a full contract in the ships’ restaurants—was lauded by the Travel Channel, the Today Show, and numerous publications, such as the San Francisco Chronicle, the Chicago Sun-Times, and others. Brian is a citizen of the world, traveling to nearly 50 nations. As an amateur art historian, he has delivered lectures to thousands aboard cruise ships. As an amateur adventurer, he has zip-lined over jungles in Costa Rica, parlayed with snake charmers in Morocco, entered the Pyramids of Giza, consulted the Oracle of Delphi, anted up in the Casino of Monte Carlo, and visited Dracula’s house on Halloween night. I LOVE This Book

I read Brian's original book and when I found myself with medical leave on my hands I browsed my Kindle for another good read. I was delighted to see Brian had a second book about the cruise ship world. Not only did I learn about art but I followed Brian's trials and tribulations with glee and outright laughter. My husband kept asking me to read out loud the parts that were making me laugh so much. I would get my smart phone out and Google the paintings and ports of call that were being mentioned. It's as if I was on the ship with Brian. I was fortunate enough to take one cruise with friends years back and they purchased a painting. I was
intrigued by the process then but now I know exactly how that process works. Please also check out Brian's website because the reader can see photographs of many of the people in the book. It just makes a great read even more interesting.
I highly recommend this book to those who cruise (and the first book also by the way) and those who armchair travel.

Same Song Second Verse

I bought Cruise Ship Confidential which I found insightful and interesting. Left me wanting more so I looked for another and "behold" Ship for Brains was here. I wanted to learn about the Art sales on ships and wanted to learn more about his relationship development. A VERY QUICK read (supposedly 422 pages but I don't think so). Read it in about a day. Lots of typos. Is this an electronic self-published book? The information about the art sales industry was interesting but the rest of the book was about all the easy sex and how our hero valiantly avoided succumbing to constant temptation (despite flirting with every attractive woman he met) to preserve himself for his distant girlfriend. He comes across as self-absorbed and self-indulgent. The book comes across as a formula repeat of the first one and leaves any mention of the development of his relationship out of the book. I can only assume that there is a third sequel in store. Light fare but a bit of an insult to the reader. Entertaining to read but I left feeling a bit cheated.

Good read - Predictable Plot Lines

I admit to enjoying the book. It was a fun mindless read, and similar to the author's first book in the series, Cruise Confidential.

I think the reader has to put the authorship of these books in the proper light. I for one think that there are certain facets of things that are probably true, but it seems obvious that most of it is comprised of things that are made more elaborate and dramatic for purposes of good reading material, rather than actually laying out tid bits that give those who like cruising an inside look at cruising. I think the author takes liberty with the truth.

With that said, the books really are good reading material because of the liberty's taken by the author.

There seems to be predictable plot lines that run through Brun's books.

1. Overall mission to reunite with the love of his life.

2. His career advancement, and hard work.

3. How sexually desirable he is, yet how true he is to his girl. He is true despite consistent sexual temptations from other woman.

4. There is always a strong male counterpart, that seems to bring about a competition or challenge to the author. Consistent challenges mostly revolve around career advancement but mostly competition for the affection of another female, be it a friend, girlfriend or wife. In this book alone it was comical in the way that this plot line consistently arose. It's really over used, and the author really should try to mix it up not just a little, but much more.

In the end the reader will enjoy the book not as an actual look at the cruise industry, but a fun read. The reader has to take a practical look at what the author had to work with. I am not sure that anybody can make a interesting read without taking some big liberty's with the truth.

Were there actual people, and did he work on a ship - absolutely. Did he do the jobs he say's he did. Yes. Was there as much drama as he wants us to believe. I really don't think so.

Good book if you consider the material.

About the Author
Professor Ronda Leathers Dively received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English (with teacher certification) and her Master of Arts degree in English (literature) from Eastern Illinois University. After gaining a few years of teaching experience in the secondary English classroom, she pursued her Doctorate of Arts degree in English (Rhetoric and Composition) at Illinois State University, completing her degree in 1994 and accepting an assistant professorship in the English Department at Southern Illinois University Carbondale that same year. Currently an associate professor at SIUC, Dr. Dively serves as the Director of Writing Studies for the Department of English and teaches in the Rhetoric and Composition program. Her areas of teaching specialization include composition pedagogy, empirical research methods, intermediate and advanced composition, and classical rhetoric. She has also enjoyed teaching special topics courses that explore intersections between creativity theory and composition theory. Professor Dively’s scholarship investigates how intersections of creativity and composition theory may illuminate how individuals negotiate transitions between various academic composing contexts―from high school to college classrooms, from general education to discipline-specific writing courses, from status as undergraduate student to graduate student, from status as graduate student to professional. Such interests generated a book-length empirical study entitled Preludes to Insight: Creativity, Incubation and Expository Writing (Hampton Press, 2006), as well as various articles and conference presentations. She has also published in the areas of knowledge transfer and religious expression.

Excellent Theme Concept, Not So Great Execution

I enjoy reading James Altucher and appreciate his sensibilities. I even corresponded with him briefly a few years ago, and appreciated his input on some writing I showed him. The theme of this book immediately caught my attention because I'm in a situation where I recently sold my own online business and concurrently took a job related to the deal, whereby I am once again a salaried employee after nearly 20 years of entrepreuneurship and solo consulting. With soon to be college-age kids at home, this was the right move for now, and it's nice that James addressed the notion that being in business for yourself is not necessarily the end-all and be all for a fulfilled life.

I'm going to be a little bit critical, though, with 3 stars (not worthless, but short of greatness!) by saying that the book seems a bit rushed both technically (typos, rough phrasing) and content-wise, where it seems that James is pulling in a grab-bag of self-help thoughts and ideas, which in some cases are contradictory and inconsistent. For example, in one section, he says it's "easy to caught up in ego..." etc. as a caution and in another "Ego. A real belief that you can be the best..." as foundation of persistence.

James likes to say that he doesn't give advice, just talks about what works or worked for him. Then why drag in all sorts of random advice and examples which don't fill out the theme, in my opinion, and seem wholely derivative in their presentation.

Recently on a long-drive for work I listened to James and Claudia interview Michael Singer, which for me was one of the most inspiring podcasts he's done - I had never heard of Singer, but I've listened now to that podcast multiple times and read his books because of that. For me, the inner journey is what "choosing yourself" is all about. If you can get past the clutter of your mind and the crazy externals, answers come. But much of this book just recycles trite bromides and success tales in a narrative that is a bit incoherent.

Finally, James' branding of "Choose Yourself" as the basis for yet another ambitious self-help enterprise is a bit off-putting, and the cynical part of me sees him entering that mutually admiring, inner circle of "famed" millionaires and billionaires who for all their accomplishments are not that interesting. They all love to interview one another! "Choose Yourself (R)" has arrived, and as the last section of the book outlines, you can form a local group - and they have formed - to spread the gospel. I don't mean to sound snarky, but that was my reaction. It's probably all good!

Anyway, I hope James can maintain originality and fresh insights in his ongoing writing and interviews - I'll stay tuned. Peace!

High hopes dashed very, very quickly.

Let me sum up this book for you right here:

- Take care of your mind and your body. You can't perfect if everything isn't tuned up.
- Have a "secret plan." Said secret plan is just taking the time to learn from others around you.
- Don't be afraid to quit your job if there's a better opportunity.
- Create multiple streams of wealth for yourself (you're on your own as to how).

For the other 180 pages, you uncomfortably watch Altucher masturbate to the fact he worked at HBO, got to impulsively quit his job, and has a wife that contributed to some of the book (maybe one chapter? It's unclear).

Great takeaway value for employees and employers alike.

In this book James Altucher takes on some of the current mythology that you've got to be a swashbuckling entrepreneur to make it in life. As he points out there is plenty of room for a rich and fulfilling life in joining a workplace that you love (like his stint at HBO). Along the way you may decide to go it alone, or not. This book gets you thinking about how to maximize your potential as an employee and how doing that is always in your interest.

And it reminds you that all the romantic tales of being an entrepreneur can be pretty heartbreaking to experience on a personal level. The 85% failure rate becomes especially relevant if you become one of them.

In his usual way James' writing makes just about everything interesting so you'll be whisked away on a valuable journey. It frankly doesn't matter if you are an employee or an entrepreneur, this book need to find its way into your brain.

As he states in the book, "Mentally strong people learn how to learn." Now's a great time to start.

Innovative and Stimulating

William Hasker's The Emergent Self is an excellent book on philosophy of mind. While the majority of philosophers in the field are gravitating towards forms of "physicalism" and "materialism" (even among Christians!), Hasker resists this trend with compelling arguments. This book is worth buying, if for no other reason, than its criticisms of a physicalist view of the mind. To date, I have not seen physicalists begin to answer the type of problems that Hasker brings to a point in this book.

In addition to his devastating criticism of physicalism, Hasker's book is also truly innovative. He develops arguments in detail for a specific type of dualism--emergent dualism--that is significantly different from Cartesian dualists (like Swinburne) and Thomistic dualists (like Stump). Hasker's innovative philosophical work broadens the playing field for dualists, which many will welcome given the failures of physicalism and classical problems with traditional dualist views. Hasker shows that dualism is not a simple theory that fits one mold. Those only familiar with traditional dualisms will find new and significant ideas to engage in this articulate book.

Hasker writes with lucidity, rigor, and wit that makes forging through the rough terrain of analytic philosophy of mind a delight, rather than a task. Those with an interest in physicalism, emergentism, dualism, or any general topic in the philosophy of mind will benefit from the work put into this book.

Excellent overview, conclusion begs the question

As an amateur philosopher, I found this book extremely helpful in getting a handle on the different views and arguments about consciousness. It took a good look at materialism and dualism and explained why they are insufficient theories in both logical and prose form. The writing was very clear and, for the most part, concise.
The author concludes with his own version of dualism which I didn't buy at all. But despite the ending, this book is worth buying for everything else.

The best review of emergent theories of mind ever!

There was no question in my mind that this book deserved 5 stars. It is an important addition to the literature in philosophy of mind. As with many such works in philosophy, Hasker spends the first four fifths of his book examining other theories of mind including eliminitavism, mind-brain identity, and various dualisms of both the substance and property variety. He explores their strengths, what motivates them, and their weaknesses. In doing this, he covers more ground and makes finer distinctions than many other recent entries in the field. He is also graciously fair. He takes pains to point out where and why incomplete or even incoherent theories appear reasonable in part. He examines other theories from their own internal viewpoint, what problems they try to solve, as well as in their relation to one another. He extends this fairness to his own theory offered in the last fifth of the book. He assesses not only its strengths compared to its competitors, but also its weaknesses.

Along the way, Hasker understands that epistemological and phenomenological issues have metaphysical implications and he addresses these in some detail as the need arises. He goes a little off the deep end in his last chapter where he tries to show how each of the competing theories of mind might deal with the possibility of life-after-death. He recognizes that in the end, only theologically based theories (which he does not care to explore) can provide a metaphysical ground for some of the implications present in the qualities of mind. His own theory warrents a belief in the reality of libertarian free will agency (for example) but he admits in the end that any theory beginning with the assumption that the physical is the fundamental ground of everything cannot provide any metaphysical ground for it! To his greater credit he recognizes that reaching for quantum mechanics or information theory to provide that ground goes nowhere. He explores both of these moves commonly seen in the recent literature.

I don't agree with Hasker's every conclusion but the depth and breadth of this exploration of recent work in the philosophy of mind is superbly done. Hasker writes well. His arguments are easy to follow. If you have any interest in this philosophical sub-discipline "The Emergent Self" should be a must read.

Meredith J. Marsh received her bachelor’s degree in geography from Calvin College in 1999, her Master’s Degree in geography from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) in 2003, and her Ph.D. (also in geography) from UCSB in 2009. Meredith has worked as a Reader for the APHG exam in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014, and she is currently an associate professor of geography at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri.

Peter S. Alagona is an assistant professor of history and environmental studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He holds an M.A. degree in geography from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has also held academic positions at both Harvard and Stanford universities.

Great for studying

Honestly, how well these flash cards work for you depends on what kind of learner you are. I waited until 2 days before the test to study and didn't have time look at my review book, and I cram-studied these cards and still made a 5 (but don't do that). They have all of the concepts and vocabulary that you need to make a 5 on the test; however, keep in mind that the cards only contain basic information and definitions, so you need to know them a little more in depth. That's why, if you buy these cards, you should also buy a review book or two to supplement it. When I took the test last year, most of the kids bought multiple APHG review books because each one somehow contains different information or ideas (but it really doesn't matter because all of the are good). I bought these cards with the Barron's book, but they literally cover the same information; the book is just a lot more extended and takes more time to read. It would be better to choose these flash cards with a different book so you have more variety and more information.
The flash cards also contain a bunch of vocab that is unnecessary, so don't focus too much on minor terms. If you are short in time, just be able to recognize them; many of the terms don't show up on the test.
Since they're more expensive than some review books, many people just buy books and they do equally as well on the test. However, flash cards are an awesome study habit, in general, so I recommend you use these, especially if you're under a time crunch.

While the note-cards themselves tend to be in good condition, the contents of them proved to be useless. I took AP Human Geo. last year and got a 5, but these note cards had minimal usage. Most of the concepts are just thrown in to increase he card count and several definitions are incorrect. Don't buy these; they're a waste of crucial time.

These were a huge help to my daughter. She was making C's on tests in her AP Human Geography class and after the first test studying with these, she made a 95%. They're great at helping kids, especially those new to AP courses, organize their studying. I'll never let her tackle another AP class without them.

ORIGINS OF THIS BOOK

We began conceptualizing this text around 1995, with the original intent of writing a follow-up to Craig Richards's 1987 book Microcomputer Applications for Strategic Management in Education. In the early stages, we began to realize not only how much the microcomputer tools of leadership had changed, but also the extent to which the general context for school leadership and the concept of leading complex dynamic organizations had changed.

Since 1995, an explosion of available electronic information and a proliferation of relatively inexpensive technologies for accessing, analyzing, and presenting data have occurred. Numerous books have been introduced that attempt to teach school leaders simple techniques of data analysis and presentation using available technologies such as spreadsheet, database, and statistical analysis software.

Although we believe it important that individuals have the opportunity to develop these skills, we believe it equally important to provide a mental model and disciplined approach for using such tools. The mental model we present is the Ecological Model of Leading and Learning. Our use of ecological is not to be confused with a literal definition of "environmental studies," but it is to be seen as a way of understanding schools and school systems as complex, interconnected ecological systems.

Our disciplined approach is collaborative improvisation. Whether jazz improvisation such as that performed by the small acoustic ensembles of the 1940s on 52nd Street in New York or baroque improvisation as performed by the great organ masters of the early 1700s, one element is critical to mastery of the art—practice. The great improvisers practiced for hours on end—decomposing music; learning to physically and musically perform a plethora of patterns, sequences, and tones; then recomposing and improvising with their newly expanded vocabulary.

Through the exercises in this book, we hope to provide students with comparable opportunities to practice decomposing and deconstructing data on schooling systems. Further, we hope that students may develop a sufficient analytic vocabulary to begin to recompose, reconstruct, and improvise with their new-tools.

ORGANIZATION OF THE BOOK

This book is organized into six parts:

• Part I—Setting the Stage: Part I provides an introduction to the ecological model and the improvisational approach. In chapter 2 we provide students with a tool—the policy options brief—for organizing and distributing information on their organization.
• Part II—Using Data to Describe the Schooling Context: In Part II we introduce the student to a series of analytic tools in Microsoft Excel for organizing and presenting descriptive analyses of data. Each chapter concludes with a narrowly focused data set and a series of questions to be addressed with the data. This part concludes with a more comprehensive data set on international investment in education and student outcomes. Students are encouraged to write a policy brief on their findings from the data.
• Part III—Searching for Relationships in Education Data: The third part introduces the student to more advanced analytic tools in Microsoft Excel. The primary emphasis is studying relationships between variables. Tools include group comparisons, scatterplots with trend-line analysis, and bivariate and multivariate regression analysis. The end of each chapter contains a narrowly focused problem set that applies the tools presented in the chapter to data ranging from student test scores across classes to state-level data on school funding and student outcomes. At the end of part III, we provide a complex and more comprehensive data set including various school resource measures and student outcomes measures. Students are provided guidance on the process of preparing analyses for a policy brief on relationships in data.
• Part IV—Measuring Time and Change in Schools: This part introduces students to the analysis of change across time. Chapter 9 addresses conceptual issues involved in studying change across time; working with time-series data, including event analysis; and understanding short- and long-run cycles. Chapters 10 and 11 address more technical issues of calculating change rates and forecasting, and a special section on financial analysis, including amortization and present and future value functions. Part IV concludes with a simulation of various demographic, economic, and financial changes occurring across time in Mission Valley Springs Unified School District. Students are encouraged to write policy briefs in which they identify important changes in the district's internal and external environment, including emergent fiscal stresses.
• Part V—System Dynamics of Schooling: This part introduces system dynamics as an interconnected and dynamic framework for analyzing schools and school systems. Chapter 12 provides a transition from data-driven analysis to model-driven analysis. The example of student enrollment forecasting is used to show students how to transition from the spreadsheet approach of cohort survival forecasting presented in part IV to conceptualizing and eventually simulating enrollment changes across time as a series of interconnected stocks of students in grade levels and flows of students from grade to grade. Chapter 13 integrates systems modeling techniques with systems thinking concepts, including feedback loops and classic archetypes of organizational behavior such as those discussed by Senge (1990) in The Fifth Discipline. Downloadable system dynamic models of the archetypes are available on the book Web site. Part V concludes with a series of more complex, comprehensive case analyses, ranging from the unintended consequences of class size reduction in California to achieving fiscal parity in New Jersey.
• Part VI—Pulling It All Together: The book provides an opportunity for synthesis with part VI. This part guides the student through a comprehensive, ecological analysis of his or her organization by using the various data and model-driven strategies presented throughout the text.

USE OF THIS BOOK IN A COURSE

For the past few years, this book has been piloted in a course titled Analysis of Administrative Problems at the University of Kansas, Lawrence and Overland Park, and in The Ecology of Data-Driven Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University. We realize that too many data and problem sets are included in this book for you to have your students use them all for preparing full-blown policy briefs. Both of us (the authors) use chapter problem sets as lab activities to familiarize students with ways to apply the various tools to the given data and to practice going through the developmental process of preparing a data-driven policy analysis. Students then choose two of the three available part simulations (Simulations II, III, and IV), for which they prepare comprehensive policy analyses and briefs.

A note of caution: The first go-round on any such activity can be a demanding and even somewhat frustrating process because students are applying new analytic methods, sometimes using new technology and preparing documents in a novel format and writing style. However, our experience has been that, despite having initial difficulties with a steep learning curve, students rapidly grow and develop skills as they progress through the activities.

Diverse types of data and problems are presented. Data range from the classroom level to the international level, and from student performance data to financial, demographic, and economic data. Many of the data are derived from actual situations, including student performance and economic data on 13 countries from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and elementary and high school data published annually by the state of Vermont.
