Really good book. We used it for a semester but ...

Rented it for my ENG1O1 class. Really good book. We used it for a semester but the book actually has good advice on not just passing the class and teaching the lesson but how to improve your own writing, how to develop and come to new understandings! You have a lot of time for checking it out, and was due 2 weeks after classes ended. Fast shipping and hassle free. They even remind you it is due and how to return it.

I think Ballenger needs to go back to school to learn how to write a textbook.

Currently am using this textbook in my English 102 class at Boise State University. It does have some useful information inside, but the organization and presentation of the material makes it almost impossible to clearly understand the material. For instance, he uses a lot of the same text, size, and colors for main headings and the subheadings. He could have varied the sizes and colors of these headings and indented material to help the reader with overall comprehension and understanding of the material. When he was explaining the writing processes of some of these genres, he varies topics and ideas, when he probably should have stuck with one main topic or research question to help the reader see how an idea becomes an essay, which can't be done when you constantly vary topics and ideas between steps of the process. Aside from atrocious organization, the information itself lacked in depth and clarity, and instead filled the pages with fluff that wasn't important in helping the reader understand the material. I have read many of these chapters over-and-over again, made notes, tried to inquire more, but the information still makes very little sense, and I've left this semester felling as though I've learned nothing at all, except that I wasted money on this useless textbook.

So far, good textbook

I've had very few "writing" textbooks in my time, especially at a college level, but I actually quite like this one. I like the approach the author takes to writing in general, and how he sometimes inserts his own experiences as a writer into the text. I havent had a chance to do very much with it so far, as i'm only about a month into my course, but I like the text and would recommend, which is saying a lot because I tend to hate textbooks as a rule. The writing is clear and understandable, and the examples that are chosen so far seem pretty applicable. No definable cons, but I don't absolutely love it, so only 4 stars.

My first HIPPOCRENE Chinese Book

I came to this book with an intermediate level of Mandarin, so I was past all the greetings, numbers, basic conversation as I had used other resources. (Integrated Chinese Level 1 Part 1, Mastering Conversational Chinese for Beginners and a couple of phrasebooks). With that said, I'm not familiar with how the previous Hippocrene Chinese books were set and how this book builds upon previous knowledge.

What I do know is, this book is extensive, clear, and I enjoy reading the dialogues so far. There is a glossary at the book that has vocabulary from the Beginner's Edition of this Chinese series so that's a big refresher for people coming from the beginner book to this book.

First, this book starts off each chapter with a conversation in characters supplemented only by pinyin followed by a reading passage that is entirely all characters that talks summarizes said-conversation. The audio couldn't have been any clearer and is one of the strongest point of this book. It really helps to hear each conversation and reading passage in a native voice and enjoy just how fluidly it is spoken; not too fast, not too slow. (coming from somebody who doesn't like to hear the standard Beijing style of speech)

The lessons then go into explaining new grammar points introduced in each new lesson then neatly ending with exercises to make sure you did understand the content. The amount of characters you will learn in this book is a little above average. Honestly, I feel this intermediate book should of been MUCH bigger because the format of this book just works sooo well, very organized and rare will be the times where you feel lost.

Clearly, one of the best Chinese books I have the pleasure of learning from and I really hope this format is kept in the Hippocrene Chinese books, I'm ready for an "Advanced" Chinese or a much more expanded Hippocrene Intermediate Chinese book!

This book is for after the training wheels come off and you are ready to make some good progress towards becoming intermediate. Excellent dialog examples, clear teaching of grammar and useful exercises. Also very good explanations of how and when and why Chinese people say something one way versus saying the same thing another way. Well done.

About the Author:

Alex Vaz
A book of this nature can be written only by an expert: Alex Vaz is the man. He started his refereeing career in 1956 under WIFA and in 1968 was promoted to the National Class by AIFF.
He was placed on the FIFA Panel of Referees in 1972 and thereafter he had the great distinction of supervising many tournaments in the International circuit, including the Pre-World Cup qualifying tournaments 1973 in Iran and 1977 at Singapore. At the National level, his refereeing was acclaimed over the length and breadth of our country.
A teacher by profession, he successfully proved his mettle in training young recruits in Football Refereeing and his ability took him to FIFA stature. As a FIFA, AFC and AIFF Instructor, he has attended several courses all over Asia and with his great expertise he conducted referee courses In Iraq, Hong Kong and Singapore. He is the only Indian till date to be selected as a FIFA Referee Instructor/ Lecturer. He continues to render yeoman service to football and refereeing. He was appointed by FIFA/AFC to take charge of referees and refereeing matters at the Asian Youth Football Tournament at Singapore,-1982, World Cup qualifying match at Nepal-1985, IX Asian Games at New Delhi-1982 and Jawaharlal Nehru Gold Cup at Kochi-1983.
As the former President of the Mumbai Schools Sports Association, he devoted his time, energy and expertise to nurture aspiring children from the grass-root level. The MSSA conducts well organized competitions in 18 different Olympic sports disciplines and Alex Vaz was the dynamic working President of this century old Association, founded in 1893, for 12 long years.

About the Author

Naturalist-Author "Wildman" Steve Brill has been leading public foraging tours in parks throughout the greater New York area since 1982. His Shoots and Greens of Early Spring in Northeastern North America (self-published, 1986 and 2008) teaches people how the foraging season begins, and his Foraging With the Wildman DVD series, along with the website he created, is showing people how it's all done. But he's still best known for having been handcuffed and arrested by undercover New York City park rangers for eating a dandelion in Central Park!

One of the top 10 herb books in print.

As a professional herbalist and herbal teacher I have over two hundred herbals and field guides at my disposal. Steve "Wildman" Brill leads the field in combining an herbal and edible plant field guide, which is readable, comprehensive, and most important ACCURATE. His final chapter of recipes will make most readers want to head into the backcountry just to find the proper edibles. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for the beginner or the professional herbalist.

On the whole, this book is interesting and informative, but I was slightly disappointed with the logical layout. The information in the book is fairly detailed and interesting, but is presented in a narrative manner. The book takes a season/habitat based approach... I guess I was expecting a more trait-based heirarchical listing system. Something that would facilitate taking an unknown plant and quickly looking up the answers to "what is it? is it edible? is it medicinal? if so, what are the details"
The approach also tends to give details on a few interesting / especially good flavored or nutricious plants and then gives a names-only grocery list of "Edible and medicinal plants" and then one of "For Observation only"
So, in summary, if you know a bit about general plant identification and your focus is on what's available for the season and habitat, this book is a valuable resource, but if you're looking for a field identification and classification tool, this is probably not the best choice.

Very nice

Although a little on the introductory side, I really enjoyed this book. I am a researcher in botany areas and I can say that the author does a great job at describing and aiding to identify and separate useful plants from obnoxious look-alikes. Somebody here suggested that the book could be organized in some hierarchical form. That is equivalent of a botanical taxonomy key. It would be great but there are keys for the purpose of organizing the info and helping to pick plants apart. I don't think it is essential here.

Somebody else said that the pretty drawings are only on the cover... is there a more literal analog of "judging the book by its cover"? While the drawings inside are black and white they serve the purpose. They are very well drawn and they are useful in identifying the plant in question. Tha author is also very conscientious and will not hesitate to say he doesn't know something and advices caution when pertinent. Excellent job.

The bottom line: it is very interesting, well organized and it sparks your curiosity. And if you wish to have a deeper treaty on any particular topic or plant you can always refer to a more specialized publication. $15? You can't go wrong.
